Graduate Options

Hi, I'm an independent at USD and I really regret not going greek. I graduate in May and then it's off to grad school. I was curious if anyone knew of any greek options for grad students. Is there such a thing?

Some NPC sororities allow graduate students to be undergraduate members. You'll need to contact the sororities' HQs of the orgs that are at your grad school.

Still, even if the HQ allows it, doesn't mean the chapter will.

I believe the co-ed service organization Alpha Phi Omega does.

As someone who will be graduating from grad school in a few months (thank God!), you really need to see how your program is going to be first. I know that I sometimes never have time to sit and catch my breath, let alone pledge a sorority. Your education is important, and I would keep in mind that grad school and pledging a sorority are both MAJOR time commitments!

Yes. I'm a grad student in APhiO, and we had several of them in the past.

Very true. Thanks so much to everyone who replied! I appreciate the info and it's nice to know there's hope for us old folks yet. (no offense intended) From what I've seen we have a great greek community here and I wish I had discovered that fact earlier. Hindsight's 20/20 I guess.

I agree with AUDeltaGam, based on my experience. But it would probably depend on your program and how quickly you wanted to graduate. If you are going through an intensive 1-year Masters program (I know these are offered in a variety of fields), you probably won't have the time (I didn't). If you are going through a lengthier program or that didn't require as many classes per semester or any outside stuff like internships, you might have more time.

Have fun at graduate school! And if you get a chance to experience Greek life while there, all the better!

I'm working on the search- can't seem to filter out all the random chit chat yet. >.< Any suggestions on search terms? Good point on the time issue. I'm staring down the barrel of at least a 2 and a half year program (go sciences!). To be, specific a geology/environmental science program at Iowa State University. Since we've only been able to make one actual visit there any I'd be interested in any experiences with the school or area. Thanks again all!

Why not contact ISU's Greek Life Office to ask about options for grad students on campus? They will probably be able to tell you whether grad students go through rush with any frequency at that campus. According to their website, they have 15 chapters and they have information posted about informal (instead of formal) recruitment.

The sad thing is that I did email someone from ISU greek life a ways back (> 1 mo.) and never got a reply. Kinda frustrating. How long should one wait before sending another or should I at all? Just hope I didn't come off sounding like a total (for lack of a better word) dork. >.< lol

my sorority, Omega Phi Alpha, allows students who are grad students to pledge.

So I called greek life who gave me the email of someone else to contact. Course she's the prospective member liason so that makes sense. I emailed her and hopefully I'll get an answer soon. *Crosses fingers*

Is your contact someone from an individual sorority chapter or someone from panhel/greek life office? I'm confused.
