Congratulations to the men of Alpha Phi Alpha! The groundbreaking for the MLK Memorial was today and it all began with your organization's efforts. A permanent place on the mall honoring that part of our history is long overdue. The design is beautiful as well. A few good links below. (The CBS video is good)
"The Martin Luther King Jr., National Memorial is a planned memorial, spearheaded by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, to be constructed in Washington, D.C. as a permanent testament to American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. The memorial will have three underlying themes: justice, democracy and hope — highlighted by the use of water, stone and trees respectively throughout the memorial."

"President Bush, former president Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, poet Maya Angelou and other dignitaries gather this morning on the National Mall to break ground for the Washington D.C. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial. It will be the first memorial on the Mall dedicated to an African-American, and our Gannett colleagues at the Detroit Free Press write in an editorial this morning that "this is a fitting exclamation point for the King legacy. And the location could not be more perfect -- about a half-mile from the Lincoln Memorial, where King delivered his legendary 'I Have Dream' speech in August 1963."
