Martin Luther King Day
I know that Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday and thus federal offices are closed.
But does anyone know if it is celebrated on a state level by all states? For some reason it is sticking in my mind that it isn't celebrated in Virginia, but I may have imagined it or something (I'm delusional sometimes, ok? )

The markets are closed and I'm waking up around 3pm and going over to a presentation in his honor at my alma mater.

All states observe MLK Day on the third Monday of January, though MLK's actual birthday was on January 15th. Some states call it 'Civil Rights Day' and if I remember correctly, Virginia celebrates Robert E. Lee Day on the same day as MLK day this year.

Bumping b/c i dont need to start a new thread for what I'm asking.
For those who have MLK Day off: are you expected to volunteer/serve, making it a "day on, not a day off?"
For those who DONT have MLK Day off, is it a regular workday? Are you expected to serve or acknowledge the holiday in some other format by your employer (celebrations, seminars or other programming)?
Does your office offer it as a floating holiday? If so, do you take it on that day or save it?
My current position, at a non-profit, is giving the staff the day off and can be used as a floating holiday. Since im considered a volunteer, it's "highly encouraged" that I serve by my boss. Which i dont mind - between my chapter and my personal feelings, I wouldve served in some capacity - but i wonder why my staff feels like they shouldn't feel that same encouragement.

I have it off and don't plan on doing anything other than taking care of my horses and visiting with my parents. They're getting back today from vacation but Monday will be my first opportunity to see them so I'm excited

My school is off. It's one of the few things we have off in the year, in addition to Labor Day, Thanksgiving break, winter break, and spring break.
I won't be doing anything other than driving down to school and getting settled back in.
