Boston U. outlaws cursing at sports events

I think my alma mater has a little too much time on its hands:

The terriers will have some serious lame court advantage now. Yeah, this post was kind of lame as well but it had to be said.

Stupid.

I have given the last couple of years, and honestly, I might not give this year. I mean, I don't give a whole lot, but it's the principle. Stuff like this does not help a national reputation.

I could see this happening at Oklahoma (Bible Belt), I could see it happening at a place like BYU or Liberty College.

But Boston University?

This has dispelled all of my preconceived notions regarding people from Boston.

How about just a minor minority report. (That's redundant, isn't it?)

I think the rule is stupid because it unenforcable.

However, I can understand how offensive language is -- well, offensive -- to a number of people who go to games.

Then, there's this kind of tired old thing that is supposed to be a part of the competitive athletic experience...

Sportsmanship.

I hope they don't expect to have a marching band very long. Ours would have been slim-pickings.

Sadly, it's driven by a small minority of (VERY rich) alumni donors and 'supporters' of BU hockey who pay out the ass for season tickets, then only show up for the BC game(s).

There were dozens of letters to the editor of the student paper while ksigkid and I were there, decrying students for swearing or being drunk at games, or really for partaking in any cheering that didn't directly support the team. These letters were always the same situation, both in terms of background of the writer (LAW '55 much?) and what prompted the writer - "I'm shocked at swearing in the stands" or "There were children three rows up from me!" It's hard to argue against these points, because on some level they 'make sense' (sportsmanship or whatever), but if you've EVER been to a college sporting event, it's the lay of the land.

Basically because it's not the way they did it in the 'good ol' days', some affluent alums have gotten their way - student attendance at hockey games lagged a little before they opened the new building, I would be surprised if it doesn't drop again.

This is the thing that angers me the most about it, the hypocrisy. If you talk to guys who were big BU fans back in the 50's and 60's, the environment was the same, just as you'd expect at any big-time college sporting event. The "good 'ol" days included taunting opponents and cursing. There are rowdy fans, fans who get excited, and yes, even cursing.

A couple of years ago they tried to ban the "F*** 'em up, F*** 'em up, BC Sucks!" chant during BU/BC games. The band has stopped playing the song, but it still happens. Going around kicking people out of the arena won't stop that, but as you said, it may keep people from going to games.

I just think it's embarassing for the school to take a stand like this.
