Question is it necessary to ask if my rec was received?

If you're worried about it, have the person that wrote the rec contact the chapter. The sorority would probably not be able to email back due to silence rules before rush.

This is where AlphaFrog and I disagree. As a disclaimer, I am saying that I have never seen a rush that required recs, so I am not completely familiar with the process. However, I personally think that it's better to be safe than sorry. It depends on when silence starts for UCF. I have never heard of a school where silence starts before everyone heads back to school.

Silence (disaffiliation) at my school starts May 1st.

If the chapter were to respond to you, that would be grounds for a rush infraction. NPC rules.

Especially if the sister slipped and typed by habit: Yes we got your rec with a or . Any minor thing can be misconstrued by an eager PNM.

do not contact any of the chapters to see if they received a recommendation for you. as others have said, they are not supposed to communicate with you and your contact might constitute a recruitment infraction. and it might seem too needy on your part.

often a chapter will send a thank you note to the alumna at some point during or after recruitment acknowledging receipt of the recommendation, and many times will let the alumna know where the pnm pledged or if she did not pledge.

if you are concerned whether the chapters received the recs. written on your behalf, the best way to find out would be to have the alumnae who wrote them contact the chapter or their recruitment advisor.

I was just wondering if it is rude to e-mail people to ask for recommendations. Thanks for all your help!
If you know the person, no it isn't. If it's some random person you don't know it might not be rude but it's a bit tacky.

I agree. But if the chapter gets hundreds of them, they aren't going to want to go hunting through the stack to see if yours is there.

The alumnae writing the recs should be able to find out where to send them with or without you telling them. I always send mine to whoever Gamma Phi lists as needing to get them.....

Silence has already started. I believe (not sure) it was in place before school ended last semester.

I *KNOW* it started (at the latest) at the start of summer A, so yeah, it's been going for at the least, 6 weeks now. Summer B is starting on monday...Dang. Now I'm all depressed about a new round of classes. BAH!

aaaanywho...

I wish you the best of luck, all of the houses here at UCF are awesome, just remember to keep an open mind and an open heart and you'll be sure to find your home!

Oops! When I read the OP I didn't think about the possible NPC infractions, but those who brought it up are spot on. Bad Z!

Instead I simply thought it might be considered rude for a PNM to contact the sorority asking whether her rec was received. Sort of like hearing from somebody else you were invited to a party, then calling the hostess who you've never met to make sure. The PNM didn't send the rec, the alum did. It's the alum's responsibility to make sure it got sent to the correct address and was received.

Don't count on Thank You notes being sent out prior to Recruitment either as a way of confirming. We do our best sending these out as the Recs are received during the summer, but we typically get inundated during Recruitment workshop and Recruitment itself. There simply isn't enough time to get them sent out.

If an alum wants to check on it, I see nothing wrong with that. Just keep in mind that whoever answers the phone many not have time to look right away depending on when you call. We file all the Recs alphabetically by PNM name so we can check fairly easily even though we get several hundred recs every year.

I have lurked here for awhile so this is my # 4 post, I think. Whoopee!

As an alum, I wanted to make sure last fall that my dd got her rec's at both my house and my mom's (her REAL grandma), so I did email the rush chair to make sure - it just made me feel better. It was just a quick question "did you recieve so*so's rec from me?"

And they were both nice enough to reply that they did. But I never did get a thank you back from my house - the last time I sent a rec in, I got a card that told me where the girl pledged to - which was nice - do they not do that any more?
