Alpha Gams in the books
Hey y'all! I had a question for all you ladies and thought I'd pop in and ask. Has anyone ever read the "Laurel Shadrach" series? It's about a young, Christian girl who goes through her senior year of hs and her first year of college. During her first week at UGA, she pledges Alpha Gamma Delta. It shows her going through pledge week, being pinned and describes her meetings and bonds with her sisters (no secrets shared or anything, it's just about what's going on in her head the whole time). Everything's in a positive light, only once were the members portrayed negatively (to show that everyone's got their faults, I guess). If anyone's read the books, what do you think about seeing your sorority portrayed in fictoral books? Is it cool to see yourselves on the book shelves?

I hadn't heard of the author or the series, so I Googled to learn more. Only found out that the author, Stephanie Perry Moore, lives in Atlanta with her husband and family.
Two of the libraries in our consortium own #3, Equally Yoked, which is the one where she goes to college. I put a hold on it.

P.S.
I'm reminded of The Three Lives of Sharon Spence, by Alpha Gam Elizabeth Corbett (Beta-Wisconsin). Corbett writes the character's story three ways -- in one, she goes to the state university and pledges "Gamma Delta."

She pledges in #4--Absolutely Worthy. If you look at the cover of the book, you can just barely see the Alpha Gamma Delta greek letters on the front, here look:

In the intro to "Equally Yoked" (which just came in on today's ILL van) she thanks "my sorority sisters of Delta Sigma Theta, particularly the Stone Mountain-Lithonia Alumnae Chapter."
The character (Laurel Shadrach) is white. Toward the end of the book she goes off to UGA and has a black roommate (Peyton Skky).
It's the beginning of the school year and she says she's going thru rush: "I'm planning on checking it out. My mom's an Alpha Gamma."
The obnoxious suitemate, Jewels, replies, "My mom was, too, and my sister still is."
Laurel later says, "I want to pledge to a sorority, too. Alpha Gamma is my first choice, but if that doesn't work out, it's OK. Showing Christ's love to people is far more important."
Later, at a block party, Laurel reprimands her former hometown boyfriend when he puts a move on her. She is overheard by another girl. "I'm Liza. I'm the pledge master for from [sic]Alpha Gam, and I wanted to tell you that I was really impressed by what you said to that guy. All the other sororities and fraternities are into crazy stuff, but we at Alpha Gam are about community service and enjoying our college years in legal ways. You're somebody I'd rally like to have in our organization. I hope you'll consider Alpha Gam." [Can anyone say "rush infraction"?!!]
Later, back in the dorm: Jewels tells Laurel, "My sister told me a lot of her sorority sisters thought you were really impressive standing up to that guy. The word is, the Alpha Gams really want you. When I mentioned to my sister that your father was a pastor, she said they really, really want you. I guess a girl who just graduated had a dad who was a pastor, and her used to come up here and do programs for them, and pray for their sorority, and counsel the girls. Now they don't have that any more, so they fell lke they could use you." [As though they wouldn't already know that about her? And she's a legacy!]
I'll have to leave you all hanging on that cliff until the next book in the series comes in.

P.S. I will try to get in touch with the author to find out why she chose Alpha Gam for her novels.
