Bay Area Greeks???

So i just recently moved back home, with the intention of transfering to SF State or USF either in the spring or next fall and interested in looking into the sororities. I was curious to know if there were any bay area greeks on GC to tell me about the greek systems at both of these schools. Thanks

== Clears throat == Well thanks for asking being at SFSU I can tell you quite a bit about our greek system... there are several other ( I think of 4 off hand) that go/went to SFSU too who can probably tell you some too... BUT at SFSU there are three national panhellenic sororities Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, and Phi Sigma Sigma. We also have all 4 NPHC... (Historically African American Sororities) on campus as well as LOTS of local sororities. Fraternity wise there are 2 larger national frats, 1 fairly small national fraternity, and again LOTS of locals.
Each NPC sorority has about 30 people in it at the moment with a total (maximum amount of members) of I believe 40 or 45. The school and MOST of its students are fairly anti greek, but since the system is so small we all pretty much know each other and attend the same parties and attend each ohter's events. Rush is relaxed and not as formal as some of the stuff you will read on some of the rush threads at big schools with houses (which we don't have) and 13 chapters. All you have to do to rush is go to open house. (there will be sorority ladies in the quad the first few weeks of school handing out fliers and telling people about rush)No pre-registration or anything needed.
I think being greek is the BEST way to make it feel like a truly "college" experience and not feel the commuter school thing so much. Rush is usually the 3 week in September in the fall (this year the 15 of Sept) and spring time is usually the second week, HOWEVER it is looking as if there is a POSSIBILITY there MAY not be a spring rush for 2004. We have LOTS of names on the list for rush this year, so if all of them go through it's possible that for the first time in SFSU's history each sorority could reach total and not have to have a spring rush (this is all speculation at this point BUT it's possible with the number of women we possibly have coming through this fall. ) I hope this helped answer some of your questions and I HOPE that you decide to rush it's the best decision I ever made !
Although I know some people who attend USF and I know their greek system is small... (if not smaller than ours) that is about all I know so I think somone else may have to help you out with information about that school on the hill

YEAH! Another SFSU Alum over here! The SF State system is very small but close-knit, because we have a kind of siege mentality due to the anti-greek attitude of the campus. The NPC sororities are doing quite well in spite of it.

I agree with Glitter650 that the chances for a spring rush next semester are much lower than usual--all 3 are pretty close to total. I was told Alpha Gam is returning with around 40 girls, and I know the other two chapters are also at a very healthy size.

As for USF, I visited their campus and met the Panhellenic several times. There was a chapter of Delta Zeta and Delta Phi Epsilon. Both chapters seemed to be doing well, but I don't know what the current status of the greek system is on that campus.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

Sorry I just had to add my two cents cuz we are the only people from SFSU, hehe and this way all 3 sororities are representing!

I have heard USF basically has no greek system. But pick a school based on your academic interests, not just the greek life.

I didn't know there might not be a spring rush, but based on what I have seen in my 2 years there I have a feeling there still will be...maybe not for all the groups since it's informal rush. Anyway ladies isn't there an NPC email contact we could give her? I don't know of any general rush contact and I'm not about to only give her Alpha Phi contact info (cuz that's not fair).

OOoooh! Me Too!!!

Hey rayray! I think I remember talking to you about Pacifica a while ago. Welcome back to the Bay Area!

I am also an SFSU Alum, and I also am Alpha Phi's recruitment adviser. While it is true that there are a ton of girls signed up to go through rush this semester, I'm still pretty sure the sororities will still be holding informal recruitment in the Spring. Even if all three NPC sororities reach house total (which is 45), each group will most likey lose girls due to graduation and transferring. Keep an eye out for the Panhellenic table and posters advertising for rush in the student center. If you have any other questions about SFSU, please feel free to PM any of us! In the meantime, here is some info: Sororities at SFSU

As far as USF goes, I looked on the website, and I only saw Delta Zeta listed. I don't know too much about the rest of the Greek system, but from what I saw it looked like most of the sororities were academic or service based. Here is the link:
USF Fraternities and Sororities

Good luck, and please keep us posted!

RhonSjones@aol.com This is the E mail addy of the panhellenic advisor any questions should be directed to her at this time as right now we are in recritment mode and A phi Bubbles and I really can't really say * too * much since we are active
there probably will be a spring rush this year... but I would HOPE that each chapter will only have to/be able to take about 3-6 people if next week goes well. WOw lots of smiles can you tell I'm excited about recruitment next week ?
