I'm born and bred yankee too, yet am in a chapter in the south. Here's my take on the "southern recruitment". So many women want to join a sorority and chapters can only take so many, therefor chapters must release women. All the chapters want the girls with good grades, activities and in some cases if you know girls in those chapters, they'll want you too. Which makes is very "cut throat" throughout the whole recruitment week. In the north, Greek Life isn't as big as in the south, so I don't think as many women go though. A lot of chapters in the south also need "recs" to join a sorority, meaning the pnm knows a member of that chapter...this also helps chapter release girls in the early rounds because 10-20 mins in a house isn't enough time to release a girl if she maybe doesn't fit with that chapter. In the north "recs" don't matter as much because not as many women go though so it might be easier for the chapter to really talk and get to know girls before any releases are made.
That's my take in a nutshell.

Interesting...if quota is always determined by dividing the number of girls going through rush by the number of houses, in theory shouldn't there be a place for everyone? Or is it that south of the mason dixon people drop if they are cut from certain houses and therefore people cheat themselves of a chance for a spot?

Quota is usually determined (at least at my school) around round 2...so that number is closer to the number expected to go though preference. Yes, it's the number of women divided by how many chapters there are. Many women do withdraw because a certian house releases them, however being a Gamma Chi this past recrutiment-I know we did everthing to keep these women and to remind them to keep an open mind. Other women also single intentional preference-or "suicide" which increases their chances of not reciving a bid. Many women in the south, from what I have noticed do this more then women in the north.

Technically that is true because of the way it works *technically* there should be a spot for everyone... BUT for one like you said.. especially in the south where a lot of chapters are older and really established and there is more of a acceptance and excitmenet about greek life people sometiems don't have an open mind a drop if they are released from the house they believe they should be in, AND becuase of the matching process it also makes it harder to get everyone into their places... I mean the PNMs are ranking their choices as well as sororities ranking PNMs... if a sorority doesn't have a girl on their list, but she listed them... then she gets no bid... same thing goes the other way... if a chapter has a girl on their list but she didn't list them as a choice.. she can not be given a bid through matching... IDEALLY everyone should get a bid through this system... BUT because of these factors.. (and a few others) it doesn't work always work out that way, which is sad especially at schools like mine where we're trying to make greek life grow we should be bidding EVERY WOMAN that makes it through pref night and finding them a home... but it just doesn't happen that way...
