Talking Shaft with Samuel L. Jackson

Has anyone seen the movie yet? I saw it last night and I really enjoyed it because it so funny. Of course, Samuel L. Jackson is one of my favorite actors so that made it even better.

I read a review of the movie by a local reporter in the newspaper this morning, and it was less than flattering. It seems to me that most black films are usually given poor ratings by critics. Is it just me, or does anyone else think they (usually white critics) have a difficult time grasping the concept of a movie targeted for a black audience? Very seldom do they get it.

MS. AKATUDE, I saw the movie on Fri. night and I thought that it was tight. I thought that everything about the movie, from plot, to script, to cinematography was excellent. Forget what the critics say. I think that black as well as all audiences will enjoy this movie. Isn't that all that counts? And you know it's gonna make some dough!

I haven't seen it yet Soror, I plan to do so this week.

I agree that black movies seemed to get less than average ratings. But money talks!!! Recent black films have done very well at the theatres.

I have not seen it yet, but I do plan on seeing it this week, too. Yes, black films are more times than none to receive poor ratings from critics. I DON'T LISTEN TO THEM AT ALL! But many Americans do and that is why so many black films do not do well at the box office, for instance DOWN IN THE DELTA. That was an excellent film, no shoot outs, no killing! Anyway... do you all know that this is Samuel Jackson's FIRST headline movie? This is the first time that HE is the star. Other times, actors such as Kevin Spacey or Dustin Hoffman were the LEAD actors. Isn't that something!

I saw Shaft on Friday and found it to be very enjoyable particularly the actor who played Peoples. He took me back to New York with his portrayal. He was very funny. I also agree that many critics give black movies no play. The only one that I will listen to is Roger Ebert. Now this may sound silly but one of the main reasons is that he is married to a Black woman. So far every movie he's picked as a winner I have enjoyed. Well that is my 2 cents.

I haven't seen the movie yet...but plan on seeing it sometime within the week. Samuel Jackson is an excellent actor and I love all of his movies. Listening to the Tom Joyner Show this morning they were taking about a review that was (as Sybil put it) "hidden racism" Sometimes I think the critics just don't "get it"

I just read on the Yahoo site that "Shaft" took in $21.1 million this weekend and debuted as the #1 movie.

Cool

I saw the movie Saturday and Peoples' character could have been better to understand but, overall the movie was tight. I was made that Mekii Phiffer had a brief part.
