Where do you find this info?

Here's the deal. The KGX deal is back up -again- . Yes I know, it was up and down for a while now....

Well, today one of the guys asked me if I was one of the girls trying to get a nat'l sorority back on campus and he said his girlfriend and roomate is extremely interested if I was. So, as I was talking to him about it, my stalker (you know, the ppl who rush and rush you even when you told them that you're not interested..) heard it and of course starts bashing it.

Well anyway, I got into a discussion w/her of the nationals that were here. I was told that -only- Phi Sigma Sigma was here by a GC source. Yet, she told me that PSS wasn't, it was Alpha Simga Tau instead. Also, that her own soro was nat'l and it was Alpha Theta Phi.

So my question is, no matter how much I look on the websites I can not get a straight answer on who was here (Rio Grande University) and who just attempted. Anyone have a website w/definite knowledge of this subject of what GLO's were at what school? Cause man, I'm getting tired of playing this game!

PS- We are back to having 7 girls...5 more to go...

Have you tried maybe the Director of Student Life office? Or Greek Life (if there is one)?

Another source is your school's library and archives. Look at past yearbooks and school papers.

Go to the alumni office and check out the old yearbooks. I can tell you at least that ASA was never there.

Re: Where do you find this info?

You can try the greek life office, university archives etc.

However when we did our search for inactive chapters on the campus... the only reliable source was: Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities. The greek life office's information ommited so many groups.....

This thing is like a lost spell book now.... out of print and hard to find, try really large libraries.

Carniegie Library of Pittsburgh is where I found the one we used it's a reference book, but if you called them they'd probably tell you the info you needed over the phone.

About 20 editions have been published over the last 150 years. In its 1200 pages it lists all colleges and the chapters which have existed at each one (!), provides detailed histories of ALL the groups and a list of their chapters, quotes significant legislation pertaining to Greek letter organizations, describes fraternities which have disbanded, major locals, important alumni, etc. It lists NIC, NPC, NPHC groups, and all honor societies and professional societies. If you're into fraternities and sororities, this is really, really cool to read. This book was last published in 1991, so the information is still very current.

Thumbs up

Try greekpages.com

Go to campus thread and look. It may take some looking to find it as they do some funny things with schools threads. Is in abc order. If does not list Rio Grande click on, find a Org and check their site out to see if they have a link to the school site!

Best of luck!!

HA HAA!

try this thread site

heh..Tom..um..that's the regular rio site..it says nothing of any importance.

Oh by the way, what the heck is a greek life office? Please understand that Rio hs been trying to get rid of the greek life forever...so..yeah..they basically hire someone either anti-greek or someone who is shoved up a certain GLO's behind so much they screw the rest of them. *nods sadly*

The only year books I could find was of the late 1960's and nothing was really what I wanted.

archangel689- I'm going to try your suggestion, maybe I'll finaly get some straight answers

Well I'm not sure...You say Rio Grande University?

this is what I found in our manuals

Delta Rho chapter, installed 1986, Rio Grande College, Rio Grande OH

Is that the same?

As for other info, sorry dunno

lol...I'm editing my post, again :P

From the AST National website:
University of Rio Grande Rio Grande, OH
Gamma Alpha* 1985

So it looks like they were installed a year before us....you know it may be a long awkward way to do things...but you could just look up every national's website roster :P

Hey Kayla, I checked the most recent Baird's Manual our main library has when I was over there supposed to be doing a group project (I was curious about this mystical piece of literature anyway), and you all definitely had Phi Sigma Sigma. I didn't check on AST, but if it's on the national website, well, then, it's probably reliable. What's Alpha Theta Phi, by the way?

Dana- Oops, meant Theta Phi Alpha. It's a national womens service org. I "borrowed" their constitution when I was drafting what ours would be modeled after.

Moosegirl- Dag on it, I knew I was right!!!! (I was thinking I got that info from you in the first place! ) Oh, and yeah, I have all the Nat'l Sorority websites already on my favorites list...but how is it I can never find this info?? lol

See..this is what I'm confused about...ZOX was told to me by members that they were formally PSS, but today I was told by an ex-pledge they were AST. *boggles*

If you all are wondering why I'm wanting to know the former soro's it is because 1. I don't want to make it seem like we're going to be 'stealing' some of anothers past and 2. to have a better chance at recolonizing.

I'm gonna be searching tomorrow of -why- they left and who they colonized...this Rio stuff is confusing. Oh, on a quick note of my girls is a legacy to Chi Omega

I may be misunderstanding your dilemma, but if your concern is stepping on the toes of another local who may have been either Phi Sigma Sigma or AST at one time, why don't you just steer away from those two groups and pick another NPC (or investigate how you or your Greek Life office could put out a call to all NPC groups for colonization on your campus). If it has been many years since either of the groups has been at your school, there may not be that many alums around, and lacking alums, I don't really see the benefits of just looking at those two.

aopinthesky,

I think what she means is that she wants to know what nationals "gave birth to" the present locals and steer away from those, but also, if there were nationals there that have completely died out, she would like to take a crack at recolonizing them cause they would be more anxious to come back to campus. Am I right?

Hey,
I'm president of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority at WVU Tech but i'm am from Huntington, WV not too far away from Rio Grande. Alpha Sigma Tau was founded on your campus on april 18th 1985 and by my records was still active as of the fall 2001. I don't know about Phi Sigma Sigma but that's what i know about alpha sigma tau

National websites may not all be terribly helpful in finding closed chapters. I know ours only lists active chapters on the open section of the website - you need to have access to the 'Sisters Only' section to find all the chapters that have been chartered. Maybe some GC'ers can try to track that info down for you with their respective groups. [FYI-we've had a lot in OH but none at your campus.]

You can always email each NPC group's HQ directly to ask if they have ever colonized or chartered a chapter at your campus. They will have the records.

33girl- Exactly what I was meaning!

(Sorry to those who were confused..I do that to ppl at times..)

ASTbunny- WTF?? That's -very- interesting..because I came onto campus and became cozy w/the glo's in 2001. My boyfriend has been there since 2000 and he never even knew that or even any of the ppl who's been around much longer. To tell you the truth, the other day was the FIRST TIME that AST was even -mentioned- to have been on campus. *hmms*

But thanks everyone for all this information though Well thank ya, I'm going to continue to ask around about National's who have been there and/or the locals that were dissolved after the nat'l left.
