SOUNDER (2003 version) will be on ABC this Sunday starring Carl Lumbly and Suzanne Douglass (Parenthood, How Stella Got Her Groove Back) -- isn't she a member of Sigma Gamma Rho as well?

"The Murder of Emmett Till" (Directed by Stanley Nelson. Premieres on PBS Monday, Jan. 20, 9 p.m. ET. Check local listings) Excerpt of Esther Iverem's review posted under "Bonus Reviews."

"...This is in-your-face history for those of us who run from it, who weren’t born in 1955 and wonder why we have to go there, for everybody who doesn’t understand that less than 50 years ago in Mississippi, a Black boy could be tortured, shot and drowned because he whistled at a White woman. And for those who remember the case well, Nelson offers, probably for the first time, interviews with witnesses who have never spoken publicly about the case..."

I watched this last night and it was excellent! It was deep y'all!! Mamie Till was an incredible woman with amazing strength. I really admire what she did to make this a national case. There were hundreds of Black people dying in similar ways, but her decision not to have a closed casket funeral really put, no pun intended, a face on what was happening for Black folks in the south.

If you haven't seen it, please do! Teachers, you need to make this required viewing in your classes!!

Thumbs up

I cannot WAIT for the Slave Narratives, and I'm almost positive most of my professors will record these programs mentioned above and show them in class. I've been talking about the narratives since I first saw the commercial.

I agree with you ladies on the importance of programming such as the narratives. I strongly feel that more youth need to grasp that slavery(particularly in the south) existed fairly recently. I think a lot of people make sweeping generalizations about southerners, not realizing that the slave mentality lingers for many reasons.... I will indeed be watching the HBO program.

Thumbs up Miles Davis

If you didn't catch this biography on Bravo last night you missed it. Miles Davis was a genuis. The interviews and pictures from the archives really added so much insight into his life. I had no idea that he experienced so much discrimination. It's been an exceptional start to African American programming for Black History Month. If Bravo runs this again, don't miss it.

Is it just me or does Black History Month seem to be getting no play this year? I mean, I see all the programs listed above, but if it weren't for you guys, I wouldn't even know about those. Usually, around this time we're bombarded with everyone jumping on the Black History Month bandwagon (i.e. commercials/ads from McDonald's, Ford, Prudential, fried chicken specials at your local grocery store (lol), etc...), but I haven't seen any of that this year. Is it because this country feels as if there are too many other important things going on like the impending war, shuttle explosion, and possible terrorist attacks? Or, maybe it really is just me. Help me out here. Have you noticed the lack of "enthusiasm" for BHM this year?

I can see your point. I was too through @ the Afro American Cultural Center for not announcing that they were showing a pre-screening of tonight's HBO Slave Narratives two weeks ago and I missed it.

That is why we need to be self-educated and in turn educate others about programs and events (not criticizing anyone). Every day I put on my board the Blacks born that day and a BLACK FACT and my kids learn indirectly without me harping on it too much. You would be surprised how much they DO NOT KNOW. Keep in mind, my classes are 90% Black students.
