Pictures for rush
Hi.
I'm going to be rushing at the University of Arizona in just a few days. I just found out that I need 15 pictures of myself for rush. I only have 10 senior pics left, so I'll use those. I was also a cheerleader in highschool, so I have those pictures as well. Would those be appropriate to use as the other 5 pictures, or is that a bad idea? I don't know what else to do! Does anyone know if you pick which sororities get which pictures, or does someone else distribute them? Thanks for all your help! Oh, and if anyone knows anything about rush at U of A, please let me know!

Well .. I don't know where are are comming from but remember that August in Tucson is hot and and can be stormy.. In fact we are having a thunder storm right now .. I can see storm cells from my office window that are moving across mid-town (and campus I would guess). So, if this were Thursday, you'd be getting soaked .. so bring an umbrella you'll probably need it.
The recruitement booklet has good examples of what to wear. Wear comfortable shoes, you'll be doing alot of walking.
I don't have a chapter at the UofA, so if you need a neutral to bounce things off of, let me know.
Good luck, I know you'll have a lot of fun.

I guess I should have answered your questions, if I can...
I think that panhellenic distributes the pictures, so I would guess you wouldn't be able to choose. I would say (not knowing what they look like) that the cheerleading ones should be ok. Mostly what you need is a picture that lets the chapter women know what you look like so that its easier to match names and faces. With meeting 600+ women in two days, it can get confusing.
hope this helps.....

Whatever picture you use, make sure your face is at least the size of a nickel or larger in the pic. If your face is not clear in the cheerleading photo, don't use it. Go down to your local photo-processing place (Eckerd, Target, Best Buy) and use the Kodak scanner to make additional copies of your senior photo.

You don't have to send portraits. You can send any decent pictures that are current and that make you recognizable when you walk in. You can have someone take a picture of you in your yard or house or you can use pics you already have of yourself as long as they are tasteful. ie no smoking, drinking, bikinis, etc. in these pics...think ones you would show your family. Good lighting is always a plus also.

If I were you, I would not use the cheerleading pictures. I was a cheerleader in high school, so I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but some people just don't love cheerleaders. The sororities will use your pictures as a way of recalling who you are, and if all they have to go by is that you're a cheerleader, that might not work in your favor. It really just depends but I think the safest thing to do is to use a normal headshot picture.
Since you are 5 pictures short, I would recommend having your mom or a friend take a roll of film of you. Do your hair and makeup, and wear something classic and not too casual. Find a pretty location (probably outside) and have them take lots of shots of you from the waist up. In a whole roll of film, you should be able to choose at least 5 decent-looking pictures to submit for rush.
I think someone else said that you don't need formal pictures for rush, and they were right. Last year, my sorority got a mix of formal photographs and ones taken by a normal person.
One other hint--make sure you (or other rushees reading this) don't submit informal pictures with more than one person in the shot. It can be hard to tell who's who.

If you have/are willing to make extras of your senior portrait (yes, I know it's a year old), that would probably be best. When I had my big meeting when Panhellenic came to tell us about Recruitment, they had a display board of how a Recruitment application should look. There were both examples of posed photos as well as portraits--so, either way, it'll be fine. They recommended that if you aren't using portraits, pictures with greenery, etc., would be good. But, most people I know used their Sr. Portraits.
I'm against the cheerleading picture for one reason---will you still be a cheerleader in college? If not, it could make you look like a person who is stuck on HS achievements and activities, and not ready to move on. Also, like someone said, not everyone is big on cheerleaders.

Go to Kinkos and use their color copier to make copies of your sr. pic. If you want to use the cheerleading pic that would be fine too. I am a membership advisor and have seen hundreds of pics of girls going through recruitment. I don't think anyone will think you are hung up on h.s. achievments if you use it. Many times the girls with the unusual pics are the ones we remember most - especially if recruitment is large at your campus (200+)
Don't stress about the pics. As Barbara said - just make sure your face is at least the size of a nickle. The idea is to try to match your face and your name. Also, be sure to write your name on the back of every pic. They sometimes get seperated from the recruitment application.

AZWildkat - I know that Preference at the UofA was last night. How did it go? I was pleased that the weather held for you'all over the weekend. Hot, but at least no storms. Let us know!
