Post excessive noise

I am curious whether fraternities/sororities
have their own standards/rules about excessive noise.

I have been living next to a Delta Psi
(St. Anthony) fraternity for three years.
Previous to this summer, these people would
have loud all-night parties occasionally.
Boys will be boys, we can live with that.
However, this summer, there is a party on the
roof every night with loud music and yelling
until all hours. I have to work each day,
and cannot tolerate having my sleep disturbed to this extent.

What do you suggest? Do the neighbors have
any recourse? Aren't you all supposed to be
trying to become upstanding members of the
community?

Cool

Most communities have ordinances regarding acceptable noise levels for different times of the day/night. Chances are that what they are doing can also be considered disturbing the peace. Next time the noise starts up call the police & let them handle it, and keep calling every time the noise becomes a problem. Sooner or later the fraternity will get the idea that this kind of excessive noise late into the night is not okay, but probably not before they get fined several times and it starts eating into their budget.

Or, you can always soundproof your house

Thumbs up

You need to call the police. I know ya don't want to be a stick in the mud and, yes, boys need to have their fun. They can go to an apartment complex swimming pool or something can't they? If it is infringing upon your life and making you perform poorly at work because of lack of sleep then you need to file a complaint. Don't think you're not being "cool" for doing this. I enjoyed fraternity parties quite immensely as an undergrad, and I know that those guys probably sleep during the day. I don't think they would appreciate it if you went over and played a big tuba in their backyard while they are trying to sleep during the day. But, like normal people you have to work while they sleep.

Thanks for the advice -- however, the
venue is NYC, Manhattan, and it seems
unlikely that the NYPD will be interested.
(and you can picture the magnitude of the
problem, if this can be noticed over the
ambient noise.)

Before calling the police you ,may want to contact the president of the fraternity. Our fraternity is in a small town that notices when a brother sneezes. We are very receptive to any complaints our neighbors have especially about noise levels. (we have an enourmose stereo built into our house, but we sound proofed the walls and keep our windows closed during parties.)

I'm going to go on a limb here and call you a troll.

Anyways (to the original poster), make your annoyance become the police's annoyance. Whenever they get loud, call the police until they finally do something. It might help if before the police, you call the president and try and set up a quiet time. If the house is on school property, then DEFINITLY call the greek life office. My school's frat row is located infront of a housing community, so whenever they get too loud the neighbors call greek life and the campus police - and they really do get noise violation tickets they have to pay or do community service to work it off.

This is a 3 year old thread. Chances are, concerned/distressed is not even on this board anymore.

Hahaha! Well shoot. That is the one thing I hate about this forum - you see a thread and think it is new, and it is from the early 20's or something. I feel stupid now

I am sure somewhere buried in this threads, our founders posted here. hahaha

Eva? Mary? Anna? Is that you?!
