When were you introduced to GLOs?

How old were you when you first found out about sororities/fraternities?

In my case, it was years ago at Girl Scout summer camp. A college-age Phi Mu camp leader used her songbook, played her guitar, and had us help her rework the words from "Picture a Girl" to "Picture A Camp".

We had fun thinking up meanings for each letter in the words 'Camp Evelyn' (C is for Canoeing, A is for Archery, M is for Mealtime, P is for Pool...my campus did not have Phi Mu so I assume Phi Mus speak/spell out the meaning of the letters P-H-I-M-U between each line of the song).

Any college-age GCers have a story to share about how they introduced a youngster to GLO's?

I was introduced to Greek life at a young age when I asked my mom what the letters were in a wood carving she had on our bookshelf. A few years later, I saw a teacher wearing a Delta t-shirt and told her my mommy is a Delta. She then said "That's good! Are you going to be a Que?" and the teacher standing with her said "He better not be!"

LOL

In turn, when I was a teacher, I would wear Alpha t-shirts as often as I could.

How did you learn about Greek life?

That thread has a slightly different angle, but you'll find a bunch of stories there.

I learned about GLOs when I went with my mother to a KD meeting for which she was serving as an adviser. I was around the age of 4, I think.

The first time I recall seeing Greek letters was when I was antique shopping with my Mom in Oklahoma. I was probably 8 or 9 and she bought me an old beat up ukulele with a Sigma Phi Epsilon decal on it.

Later, when I was 12 or 13, my Mom was very active as a volunteer for the local MS Society. The Chattanooga Chi Omega alumnae sponsored a fundraising event for MS.

I'd seen "Animal House" and "Revenge of the Nerds" as a child, and that was the sum total of my knowledge of GLOs - until some friends of mine a year ahead of me went to college and joined sororities. I would say that was my real introduction to GLOs.

My first cousin is a Sigma, and when I was younger, I used to ask him what his letters said. I didn't know anything about being greek then. I just saw him wear letters a lot while he was in college, so I then began asking questions. He showed me Spike Lee's School Daze, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't really understand it, but I liked it. When I got to Ohio State, it all started coming together like a puzzle. Becoming an Iota is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I think the first time I saw letters was when I asked my mom why she got a magazine called "EAT".
