My recruitment was so competitive/fun/stressful that .................

So, I had a few of daughter's friends here a few days ago. They are preparing for recruitment in the fall. Suddenly they started kidding around about their recruitment and the different components of the above were mentioned.

My D said that her recruitment was so rushed (no pun) that she lost 5 lbs from the walking and not having time to eat. Life is unfair is my comment. And in the end: bid night was the best part. (ok, dud)

One friend said the recruitment was so competitive because suddenly she saw all these other amazing girls who were going through with her...she ran home to get her roots redone.

One other said that it was so much fun because her mom (a southerner) took her shopping for recruitment and never said no to anything!

Does anyone have any of the My rush was so.....to add?

My recruitment was a little nerve-wrecking, just because I hadn't really done anything like it before. The only student orgs I was in were the ones where just just showed up. You didn't have to "get picked" for them.

When I was going through COB, I jumped everytime my phone rang.

I didn't know if they were calling me to tell me they wanted to invite me to the next event, or to tell me I sucked. lol.

Also, anytime I talked to one of my friends, I was all "OMGWHATDOIWEAROMGWHATIFTHEYDONTLIKEMEOMGOMG!"

I didn't even go to a competitive school, but I just really liked Sigma and really hoped they liked me back (and I'm terrible at reading people.)

My rush was so ... relaxed!

Being the first greek I had no idea about recs and sororities in general, so there was no pressure. All I knew was that I needed to probably sell myself to those girls, but that was it. Looking back on it all .... geez .... I was rough, but me.

^^ What she said! My school was a mid-sized regional university with a lot of commuters and first-generation college students (both of which my house had plenty) and wasn't go-Greek-or-go-home. I wasn't interested in the one house (out of six) that cut me. Out of the five houses that invited me back, I was very interested in two and marginally interested in one. One of them rushed me too hard, to the point that they looked desperate, one would have gotten me if they'd rushed me a little harder. But I felt I fit in best with the house where I ended up, so things work out the way they're supposed to be.

I likened my rush to Hell Week....I went through at ASU (Arizona) and man I thought it was competitive, even with 13 chapters and a Colonization attempt by SDT...it was brutal and horrid, this was back in '91.

If ASU is not a competitive campus, I would've never made it through a competitive campus...plain and simple.

My rush was so self esteem building!!

I got invited back to all the sororities (except one I cut, and one I knew I had no chance in hell at) for the invite only parties. Having come from an adolescence where I failed regularly at things that entailed "trying out" in any way shape or form...it was a nice change. I know it wasn't a competitive rush but it helped me more than you can imagine.

My rush was easy.

The school wasn't very competitive to begin with (most of those who make it to pref receive a bid), and I was lucky enough to receive a full schedule and to be invited back to the chapters I wanted every round. Honestly, it makes for a pretty boring story and that's why you'll never see a Kappamd retro recruitment thread, lol.

My rush was ...effortless. i loved all of it! I enjoyed every single house I went to and agonized over declining invitations, because I genuinely liked everyone I met. Fun, fun, fun was my attitude then (and now) and so I just made the most of it.

Not typical, I know, but wow, did I ever have a blast going through. I even overslept (napped) and was late for a party; I got there as fast as I could, popped in through the sliding glass door, and announced myself to much laughter and applause. I didn't know any better, all I knew was that I received an invitation and I'd better show up, late or not. That house did invite me back, and no, it wasn't Theta. From what I've learned, no way that could happen today in many recruitment settings.

Preference was agony. It was a very difficult decision. To this day I have remained "friends" and in touch with many of the women who were Greek in college. I can honestly say that the Panhellenic spirit is very important to me, and I've yet to meet a Greek (NPC or NPHC) that I don't like (well, okay, maybe one alum, a long time ago, she was... um... okay, enough said).

ellebud, this is a great thread! thanks for sharing with us.

My rush was cold.

That's the best way I can sum it up. We probably spent a good 5 hours outside everyday and it was about 10 degrees and there was freezing rain. We joke that at Virginia Tech, recruitment is all the hazing you'll get.

my rush was so clueless. i went thru rush totally unaware that i was cutting some of the most sought after sororities, just enjoying getting to know the sorority girls as i went from house to house. i look back now and chuckle about it-i never got nervous, because of my cluelessness.(I did have recs. and new outfits and can talk easily with strangers, so i am sure that helped-a lot!)

^^^ THIS. I had no idea how anything worked, I was so ridiculously ignorant. I barely knew what a sorority was, let alone what the individual reputations were, and I had no recs or alumni advice at all (but OSU is deferred and not what i would call competitive, so it was ok). I was the epitome of "not doing your research"- i'm sort of embarrased about it now! But I loved the whole process and ended up where I was meant to be . Just proof the system works if you let it.

Oh how OSU Rush has changed. Our's was not deferred -- early September before the quarter began. Soooooo.....

18 houses in one day....my day after first round of Rush was so silent. Why? I was hoarse! (and my feet hurt)

In ONE day?! I thought it was bad having 18 houses over two days. That's crazy.

Yes ma'am, first round was all 18 in one day with a one-hour break for lunch at a Fraternity house that typically has only two ladies rooms. Even my face hurt from smiling.

My Rush was pure torture!!! I've already done my retro thread so I won't rehash it but it was horrible. That said, I would do it all again if that's what it took for me to find Kappa Delta.
