Short and Sweet Recruitment Spring 2010
Hey! I'm so excited to finally post my recruitment story
Well I just transferred to a new and much larger university, while at the same time moving home and becoming a commuter. Ah! I was determined to not make it like high school.. wake up, go to class, go home and repeat. I wanted to be as involved or more than I was at the school I went away to. I heard about Fraternity & Sorority Life from someone on campus and decided to check it out. I met a few girls, went to a few rush parties, and then formal recruitment started on monday.
There are over 25 fraternities and sororities on campus, but only 3 national sororities. I'll call them by the names of my favorite magazines, i guess.
Cosmopolitan
Marie Claire
Vogue

Ok, so the first day of recruitment was Universal Night. Basically, we walked in and got assigned a group number. We split up and played a few ice breakers then went as groups to each table to talk to the girls.
My first table was
Cosmopolitan...
as soon as I walked over to the table, I already got a strange vibe. The girl who was talking to me was not very talkative and seemed disinterested. She just kept asking me if I had any questions, which I did but she just was not great at answering them. Then another girl came over who was really sweet and a lot better conversationalist. When our time was up I felt uninterested in this sorority but then again, it was only the first night.
Second was
Marie Claire...
From the start, I liked these girls more than the first group. There was a sister who I went to middle school with who was nice to catch up with. The girls who rushed me were sweet and easy to talk to, and the time went by really quickly. Before i knew it, time was up. I liked these girls and would definitely keep them in mind.
Last of the night was...
Vogue...
Now these were the girls that I had gotten to know before formal recruitment even started. i loved every girl I had met, but was definitely open to other options. I walked over and instantly fell into conversation with 3 or 4 of them. I definitely wanted these girls to be my sisters, but they were considered the most "popular" sorority on campus and I didn't want to get my hopes up.
Anyways, that was the end of day one! More to come of day 2/3

Day 2!
We all gathered in a classroom, ready for day 2, which was supposed to be Philanthropy day. Oh but of course, there was a surprise. Classes were cancelled for the next day (same as preference night) so we were going to extend the night, combine it, and get bids on day 2! everyone was freaking out, we were all so nervous and scared. i wasn't prepared for this! anyways.. we got into our groups and went room to room this time....
1st room...
Cosmopolitan...
After waiting impatiently outside the room for a few minutes, they finally let us in. We were told to choose a table, where we were going to make valentines for children as a philanthropy project. i was pleasantly surprised to have great conversations with the girls in this chapter, and they were all very down to earth and really seemed to enjoy each others company. i liked these girls but they weren't my favorite.
2nd room...
Marie Claire...
They sang a cute song and grabbed us one by one as we walked in the door, leading us to a table with markers and t-shirts. we did an ice breaker but couldn't even finish because we were all getting along so well. i really got along well with the girls in this chapter, they were sweet and funny, but I only got to really talk to 2 girls. I liked them more than Cosmopolitan but the night wasn't over yet.
Last Room...
Vogue...
This chapter also sang and took us by the arm to a table. i thought this was so cute and wondered why the first chapter didn't do anything like this. i knew going in that this is the place where i wanted to be, but the nerves were taking over! i loved all of the girls i met in this chapter and knew i could see myself here. the vp of recruitment made such a sweet speech about the impact Vogue had on her life. We all loved it =)
Anyway, after we visited all 3 rooms we were led back to the original room where we were told to write down our top 2 choices. I knew what my first choice was but was torn over what to put as my 2nd, or if to put a 2nd at all. Apparantly, if you put 2 and got your 2nd choice and denied the bid, you can't accept a bid from any other chapter for a year.
This whole thing confused me and i ended up putting ...
1. Vogue
2. Marie Claire
Then at the last second I crossed out Marie Claire and hoped for the best, seeing that if I didn't get a bid at all I could go to C.O.B. for all 3 chapters if I wanted. Too many snap decisions!
They told us we'd be getting a phone call from someone in the chapter if we got a bid, that night... so nerve racking!

I don't know if it was smart of the school smooshing everything together like that. I'm glad you knew where you wanted to be though and can't wait to find out what happens!

I agree, smooshing it together was probably too hectic for all of us, but we got soo much snow, classes were canceled yesterday and half of today, so they were afraid they wouldn't get a chance to reschedule.
Anyways, after we filled out the form, I went back to a friend's suite who was also rushing and we very impatiently waited for a phone call (no bid cards i guess because of how the night went)
I was with 2 other girls waiting for a phone call and finally, about an hour and a half later, i got one!
I got a bid from Vogue!!! I am now a proud new member of
Sigma Delta Tau!!
thanks for listening =)
p.s. those other 2 girls also got bids!
