local to a national...
Ok so this is sort of a random question, but I was just thinking about it last night. You are an alumna member of a local "ABD" and years after you had graduated "ABD" became the NPC "XYZ." Would you now become a member of "XYZ"? Do alumas get absorbed into the NPC as well as the active members? or is it just actives who become new memebers? Would your daughter be a legacy to "XYZ"?
Again just curious as to how this process would work.

Most NPC groups give alumnae members of groups they absorb the opportunity to become members of their organization. Some but not all of these women take that opportunity. Imagine what you would feel if ADPi decided to become AOII. (I am only using examples only so no one get mad!!) Some alums would take the opportunity and join AOII with the rest of the group, but a lot would want to keep their old traditions and rituals and stay ADPi even though it would no longer exist outside of their memories. If it were the other way around and AOII was joining ADPi, I would probably not join ADPi and just keep my simple AOII pins and ritual....but to each her own. For collegians, obviously, this is a different matter entirely.
Depending on the rules of each NPC, this would or would not make their daughters legacies. In AOII, all members, no matter how you become an AOII, are equal, so all daughters are legacies.

If the local "ABD" was absorbed by an NPC sorority, the alums would be contacted and given a period of time to join. The local sorority would contact the alums they keep in touch with and let them know that they were being absorbed by an NPC and if the NPC allowed this, the alums could be initiated when the chapter was installed. I'm sure every NPC has different policies and procedures for this. Yes, if your mother was a member of "ABD" and she then proceeded to be initiated into the NPC, you would be considered a legacy depending on the sorority. Every NPC has different legacy policies but most consider daughters legacies.

This would be up to the national that was absorbing the local. ZTA does give all alumnae of the local the opportunity to become Zetas. At my chapter only a small handfull did. This has to be done at the time of chapter installation. I had an alumna contact me a 10 years later, she wanted to become a Zeta since her daughter joined an NPC in college. She could not since the invitation is only "vaild" during the installation year.

Exactly.
I believe most NPC organizations do allow alumnae of absorbed locals to be initiated. Such women immediately take on alumna status. (This is currently the only form of alumna initiation that AEPhi offers.) Women who accept the invitation and are initiated hold the same status as alumnae who followed the "traditional" path of rushing and pledging and being active members during their undergraduate years. Thus, these women's daughters (and sisters, granddaughters, nieces, etc. per national policy) are considered legacies.
The only exception would be for alumnae of the local who have been initiated into other NPC sororities. Once you're initiated into one NPC sorority, you can never join another.
