Kentucky IFC Expansion
Just thought I'd share this with you guys. I've been on the expansion committee for the IFC and my chapters representative in IFC this semester. We brought in four nationals to present to us, Alpha Sigma Phi, Beta Theta Pi, Theta Chi, and Delta Upsilon. The first three had chapters here at UK previously and all close for various reasons.
We are thrilled to invite back Beta next fall, Fall 2010, and Delta Upsilon in the Spring of 2012. And bring back Theta Chi in the Fall of 2013.

Hot Damn!
From what I recall, Beta Theta Pi's and Theta Chi's houses were acquired by the University when the campus expanded. (Maybe owned by UK and "taken back" as it were.) As such, both chapters declined in numbers and ended up closing.
I was pleased to hear President Todd - and others in the UK Administration - note that it was a priority to work with current chapters regarding housing *as well as* look to bring back the fraternities that lost their houses due to previous campus expansion. Hopefully this is a trend that will continue.
Go Cats!

According to the UK Fraternity and Sorority Statistics complied by the Dean of Students, the average IFC chapter size for the Spring of 2009 was 75.62 with the range being 23 to 129 members.

Well. We lost SigEp Last year, and odds are we're about to loose another one, Lambda Chi, and Nationals is looking into another one because they require their pledges to drive the parties. Feels like we're getting rid of the bad ones and replacing them with new ones. Makes me sad that there are chapters at UK that still haze, but I'm glad they're getting caught.

My understanding is that the UK Administration said that Sigma Phi Epsilon could come back in July of 2011. Now wither the SigEp HQ re-charters at that time is a different matter. My guess is that Lambda Chi Alpha may have a similar fate - i.e. off campus for a couple of years.

It seems that *generally* speaking, when the university administration allows it, fraternities have been able to return to campus within two to four years. Especially if they have a strong alumni base and own their house etc. This applies not just to UK fraternities but at other colleges as well. As such, I would expect both chapters to return as soon as they are able to do so.

If membership numbers of both Sigma Phi Epsilon and Lambda Chi Alpha are removed from the Spring 2009 UK Fraternity and Sorority Statistics, the average fraternity size drops to 74.21 per chapter. The range remains from 23 to 129 members.
