GreekAlpha Soup I appreciate it , but this is the Fall 2007. The Spring 2008 was out 4 months ago , but Panhel won't publish it for some reason. The Frat boys had their Spring 2008 grades up 3 months ago. Last year they were posted by June. I didn't realize Claudia had retired which now explains the problem I have noted in the office in the past months.

Sorry to have been off so long, I know many of you have been looking for me. DD just texted to let me know that they are at the house and "already havin fun!" So glad to hear that! I'm not going to say where, but I think she's found a great spot!
I hope everyone's story is ending happily tonight!
Regarding some of the other earlier posts on recruitment, I think UGADad has a great point when he suggests that it occur later in the year. Many schools do this. Not only does it give the pnm's a better chance to get to know the sororities, but the sororities also get a chance to know more about the pnm's and see them in action...whether it be volunteering at a shelter or making the walk of shame from a fraternity house at 6:00am!

I was looking for the grade report a few weeks ago and was surprised it wasn't up. While it has information that is good to know, I don't there was anything on there that was radically different from the last couple of semesters. I also can't imagine someone making a decision about which group to list on a bid card based on one semester's grade report. (which isn't to say that I wasn't looking for it).
Some campuses don't even post them at all, so I'm sure sure that UGA's greek life office was especially remiss. You might want to dial back your expectations for responsiveness or you are likely to be very unhappy dealing with UGA while you or your child are enrolled there. I love that school, but you have absolutely no hope of prevailing on staff to change the way they run it through multiple demanding emails. If you do hope to effect a change, you'll have a much better shot working from the inside serving on panhellenic than demanding from the outside.

Claudia's back... but they also have a new Panhellenic advisor they hired in Dec... Kat Gillen (?) I think she's a tri-sig which is one of the few sororities not at UGA.

But this change wouldn't come without costs. While the present system is imperfect, the number of girls participating would make running the process while classes were in session pretty challenging. The number of groups and parties mean the process would last a pretty long time because you could have fewer parties a day. While SEC recruitment is less frilly than it used to be, it's still expensive and very time consuming for the girls in the groups. I'm not sure that it would be less stressful for anyone to stretch it out.
Some campuses manage to do it, but if you talk to girls at Ole Miss, I'm not sure recruitment there is a bed of roses.
It's not that I'm particularly opposed to deferred recruitment, but UGA actually did a study and decided against it. Armchair quarterbacking recruitment is fun, but it's a little disrespectful to the people in the trenches to assume that you could do it better when most of us don't even know what goes into to doing it at all. (For the record, I have absolutely no official connection to recruitment at UGA other than writing a few recs.)

I agree with UGAMomof4....I, too, think recruitment should be later (and anything, really, could be better than ending with bids issued on the first day of class....duh....freshmen....huge campus....we started right off sending a message that greek was as (if not more) valuable than class what with all of the focus on the bid coming. Of course, I went right along with it all and didn't override that impression with my DD since I was just as wrapped up in waiting for the bid to come out, and how the first night at the house went for her. Classes? Who noticed classes?

Oddly, I think the decision to do bid day this way was actually an attempt to downplay recruitment. In the bad old days when recruitment was way before classes started, it was not unheard of for girls to decide to transfer after a bad rush.
Now, if you moved recruitment further into the semester, you don't have that problem, but you have a host of others.

It just seems like UGA is much less forthcoming with results than other comparable campuses like Auburn and Alabama. I am impressed by the fact that the post bid lists on bid day, and seem to maintain good stats over time.

Last year they did post the bid lists pretty promptly. I hoped it was part of a trend, but if they've moved back to the previous director, I'm not sure what that means.
And honestly, we're really only talking less forthcoming than two of the most open campuses in the country.

Alabama and Auburn are exceptions in publishing the bid lists and distributing them to newspapers. Most colleges and universities ignore this news - and it IS "news." A name and a hometown is hardly a lot of information. I'm very glad that they do this - the day they quit doing it, believe me, they'll hear about it!

Have to agree...when you move recruitment - especially a massive one - to occur concurrently with classes, there's a lot of conflict. PNMs have to miss classes to go to parties...or vice versa. The longer you delay, the more vicious the tent talk and the more ridiculous the rumors. It's so much better to get it done and over with.

You're probably right! It's certainly not unheard of that girls leave school when they don't get their choice of sorority...stupid as that is.

It's true: I have a friend who transferred schools three times until she got into Gamma Phi Beta.
