I won't say what sorority my daughter is in at Illinois, but she was assigned a temporary little sister once they got their bid list.....a sweet, adorable girl my daughter really enjoyed rushing who was clearly thrilled to get her bid. I assume they met quota because they have 57 girls. About half way through the bid day activities, she told my daughter she was very sad to say that she was not really going to accept her bid as her parents had made it clear to her before pref parties they could not afford the expense of a sorority. My daughter was stunned and the pledge clearly upset she can't continue. My daughter feels terrible for this girl, but very upset that this pledge took the spot of a girl who really wanted to be in her sorority. I know Panhellenic and every sorority make the financial commitment very clear at the get go, but I know this still happens and it's a lose-lose for everyone involved. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it somehow works our for all parties involved.

It was kind of bogus for her to go to bid day, but she may have felt she didn't have any other chance to explain to the members why she wasn't taking her bid. The chapter should have a list of women at the ready to accept that bid - including upperclass friends of sisters who didn't rush, as well as unbidded women who went through formal.

Seriously, drop out BEFORE they've decorated a bunch of stuff with your name on it!!!

Anyone have news on Phi Sig? I couldn't find that much info on the website without registering as an interested PNM.

What a shame for all concerned. I hope that everything works out so that the new member can remain a member.

And congratulations to GreenTeaGirl on her Sigma Kappa bid!

According to the U of I Fraternities & Sororities page, there are 1000 new members...not sure if they just rounded that off nicely or if thats an actual number, lol That puts U of I at a 73% retention rate (which includes women who dropped out). Pretty on par with past years.
