If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there are several threads about UofI you can look through.

I do know that it's fairly competitive for an IL school, but nothing like an SEC or anything like that.

You might also PM DeltaBetaBaby...I know she went there.

I went there, so did ZILLINI and AOIIGAL. There have been some U of I threads in past years - I know there was one last Fall. If you have a specific question, feel free to PM me. I think DeltaBeta Baby is still an advisor on campus, though, so she would be good to ask too.

It depends which campus you're talking about. Chicago, Urbana or Springfield?

Probably Urbana, Chicago is usually refered to as UIC, and Springfield UIS.

UIS doesn't have Greek Life (not ON campus, I don't know about City-wide chapters, and I didn't see anything about APO or other service GLOs)

Hmm, I wonder if that should be my project while I'm there

U of I is competitive in a midwest kind of way. Lots and lots of chapters, most of them very strong and very old. If you want maximum options get recs, some houses cut without them. Other equally-good chapters don't require recs. Most chapters could practically fill their new member classes with their legacies, there are so many. Typically recruitment is about half freshmen and half sophomores with a few juniors. Sophomore status doesn't seem to hurt much. Take notes because you will visit 20 chapters first round.

^^^ co-sign what irishpipes said about taking notes. With so many chapters, it can get confusing very quickly. However, to add to that, make sure to keep a hold onto your notes. It seems that every house ends up with a few books left by PNMs.

They're not all "ON" campus, they're all within 5 minutes drive (slow narrow streets) in any direction.

Houses are scattered all over Champaign & Urbana. Most of them are more convenient than the dorm since they have been on campus longer. All of the NPC groups are housed.

Exactly, the Chapter houses are all scattered, but there are some "clumps" of a few fairly close together. There isn't a traditional Sorority Row like many other campuses. In the earlier rounds of Recruitment many PNMs would carry comfortable walking shoes in their bags and change between parties to walk to the next house.

Back in my day they ran a shuttle on Pref Night so the PNMs could make the next party in time because the houses are so spread out. The two furthest apart used to be Sigma Kappa and ZTA (no longer there from what I'm told ). I'm guessing it would have to have been a 45+/- minute walk to get from one to the other.
