Now that I think more about it.... I think I was more drawn to Theta for their symbols. I just could NOT picture myself wearing some of the other colors that were represented, nor could I see myself collecting the symbols or mascots. The black and gold, the kite and twins stars.... they drew me in!

Green is my favorite color, so I've always been happy about that. Green and white are also the colors of my high school and middle school, and since I played multiple sports during both, my closet is now full of green and white clothing. I like that the colors go well together and are easy to wear.

I will admit that the katydid is a little weird. I do love the nautilus shell and dagger, but like others have said, I've always been a little jealous that they're not easy to find like many other symbols are. I like the teddy bear for use as a big/little gift, but I'm not likely to buy a teddy bear anything besides that. And while I do find white roses to be lovely and appreciate that they are easy to find, I've always admired the unique flowers that other orgs have chosen.

Gamma Phi Beta's mascot

For some reason I can't get a Gammy Bug picture posted, but I'm happy it is no longer the official mascot.

Of course, that means we don't have a mascot. I can live with that.

I don't think the Gammie Bug was ever an official mascot. It seems to have been more of a regional thing. Most alumnae and collegians have never seen/heard of it. I'm very glad it is not our mascot, despite the efforts of some members who would like it to be. Our founders didn't feel the need to establish a mascot, so I don't see the need to identify one now...especially something that, frankly, looks very childish.

I've only seen the Gammy Bug in materials from HQ and one nationally distributed item - on a local level in the 80s when I pledged it really only came up during pledgeship. I did have a large plastic cup with the Gammy Bug - I'm going to do some research and see what I can find. I agree with you that we don't need a mascot. I love the elegant simplicity of our crescent, and like our colors, I like that it is ours alone in the NPC world - of course, some fraternities have crescents, too.

Delta Delta Delta also includes the crescent as official insignia. Granted, it is not a waxing crescent moon.

Official Insignia

Three golden stars, crown set with pearls, within a gold crescent of three hundred degree bearing three deltas in black enamel is the official badge of the Fraternity. Tri Delta initiates receive a Stars and Crescent Badge with her initials, the Greek letters of her chapter, and her chapter Initiation number engraved on the back. The badge belongs to Tri Delta and is lent to each member during her lifetime or as long as she remains a member.

(Disclaimer: IrishLake is a bug nerd.)
Awww, I think bug mascots are adorable! If I had to choose between a black cat (like some Theta chapters recognize as an unofficial mascot) and a bumblebee, I'd pick the black and yellow bumblebee hands down! My Little gave me a stuffed bee that she stitched "Bee a Theta" on it's wings. I willed it down, but I loved it!

I'm actually a bit surprised none of the NPCs use the bee - for an insect, it's awfully cute, and the symbolism is good, too.

It is my understanding that Betxi replaced Al. However, that blurb certainly doesn't make it clear one way or another.

I like the name Betxi Bear, but I don't like the cartoon. The actual Betxi Bear teddy bear is quite cute though (can't find a picture, sadly).

Yeah i couldn't find any pictures of Al either, but all the chapter sites use the same language, not retiring per se, but not really showing him off either.

Speaking of mascots, I have to say I've always been fond of DG's Hannah Doll. However, many girls in my chapter found her to be creepy.

To answer an earlier question, GE is ths sponsor of our Leadership DELTA program. Its a great example of a strong corporate partnership that we should do more often.

On the topic at hand, I absolutely LOVE Delta's symbols and colors. Nothing is particularly weird and everything ties together. Our official colors are Crimson and Cream but red and white are acceptable substitutes; I tend to prefer deeper reds because orangy reds seem strange. Our unofficial mascot is the elephant which I like in every form except circus elephants which seem so inappropriate to me.

I truly look forward to the "do more often."

Thank you for answering agzg's question. Sorry I missed it, agzg.

I know that this thread is about symbols and colors, in general, and not only about paraphernalia. But, do most GLOs have licensed vendors? Delta does and Sorors and those purchasing items for Sorors are strongly encouraged to use them.

For people who feel some kind of way about their GLO's symbols or colors, when it comes to buying actual paraphernalia, has using a licensed vendor (or a particular type of vendor) helped at all?

A number of organizations, including mine, are covered by "Affinity Marketing Consultants, Inc." - http://greeklicensing.com/about.asp.

Generally yes I've been more happy with the licensed vendor stuff with a few exceptions, one is that a good handmade item or personalized item - like a shirt with embroidery done at a local shop or something from etsy that is well done can be as good if not better than licensed vendor stuff. The second is that sometimes the big vendors start to sell stuff that looks all the same. Oh look 26 different pads of paper with letters and polka dots, well that's .. ok I guess. But overall, things like a graduation stole and such have led to better results from licensed vendors.

I rarely thought about squirrels (except to avoid them in the street) before I pledged Alpha Gamma Delta.

I loved green and yellow while growing up...red was occasionally. That being said, I do wish that our Founders had been more specific about what shade "buff" was supposed to be. So, now most AGDs use the BRIGHT yellow but I keep thinking..hmmm..is that what the Founders meant?
