I guess this explains why she sounded a hot mess!!

Chaka Khan blamed strained vocal chords for her screeching performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The Associated Press
Updated: 6:12 p.m. ET Aug. 31, 2004NEW YORK - If you thought Chaka Khan sounded a bit off-key during her performance with rapper Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards, you were right.

The R&B diva is blaming strained vocal cords for her screeching performance at Sunday’s awards show in Miami.

A statement released Tuesday by her publicist, Brit Reece of PMK/HBH, said Khan had to cancel a performance in Park City, Utah, Friday night because her voice was strained and she was under doctors’ orders not to perform.

However, she “received a cortisone shot just hours prior to her VMA performance to honor her commitment to Kanye West.”

Reece said the shot helped her a bit, but she still struggled through the performance of “Through the Wire,” which contains a sample of Khan’s old hit, “Through the Fire.”

Reece said Khan’s voice has been strained because of intense recording for an upcoming album due out in October.

For now, Khan is resting her voice, not speaking.

“She’s supposed to perform this weekend in the Bahamas, and as of now she is going to do it,” Reece told The Associated Press. “She’s resting her cords completely this week.”

Well unfortunately you know he feels that he has something to prove now that he is in Miami...I mean he has straight up promised a championship to the city...I hope that he can deliver.

I knew something had to be wrong with her. I have seen her live twice(Zulu and Essence Fest) and she was on top of her vocal game. I think Alicia Keyes was under the weather too.

I saw the repeat

And sure enough, Vivvy A. Fox was on stage undulating and gyrating w/Lil' STD, the Diseased Twins and Petey Pablo.

My roommates couldn't believe it was her. I said, yes, it's her, but I couldn't stop laughing during the whole sequence. Almost choked on my dinner.

Wow...

Man killed on Usher yacht
From ANTONELLA LAZZERI
in Los Angeles

A CREWMAN drowned as rapper Usher held a VIP party on a luxury yacht.

The US star was hosting a bash for 70 celebrity guests at the MTV Video Music Awards.

But as they danced and drank crew member Craig Rochel, 34, was diving underneath to do some routine maintenance work.

The next morning other crewmen on the boat, Gray Mist III, realised he was missing and a search was launched.

His body was found washed up on the shore near where the yacht was moored in Miami.

A source close to Usher, 25, said he was “totally horrified” when told of the tragedy.

When Usher arrived at the awards he said he “didn’t know” what had happened to Rochel, and added: “I’m not responsible.”

Millionaire entrepreneur John Kaufman had lent him the yacht for the party, where guests included Christina Aguilera, Naomi Campbell and Presidential hopeful John Kerry’s daughters Vanessa and Alexandra.

Miami police said they were investigating but that all the signs were that Rochel’s death was an accident.

Usher later won a best video award for his single “Yeah!”

That seems a little rude and insensitive. Um, no one ACCUSED you of anything.

Where exactly was this party? The ceiling looks low, it's cramped, and the guests are all "pale."

Looks like a yacht party which was en vogue this year being in Miami and all. As for the paleness of guests, I am thinking sea sickness maybe

On the one hand, I can understand wanting to separate from something that could end up being foul play, but on the other, b!+(#y thing to say at all.

That song was GARBAGE. PURE HORRIBLE STEAMING PILE OF PEE!

I mean Beyonce looked bad, Usher looked pretentious, Chaka Khan sounded bad, but NONE of them were the extended torture that was the Nelly/Christina performance.
"B" should have left the Foxxy Cleopatra costume at home. She is too pretty to walk around looking a hot mess like that. I LOVED the way "J" was dressed. Although I usually don't think of Usher as fine, he was doing some things for me when he arrived on the yacht in the white suit. I missed the performance with Nelly/Christina. What song was it? I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought Chaka was not singing in the same key as the background music.

I was saddened to see Vivica put herself out there in such a manner. She will have a difficult time being taken seriously as an actress now. It's difficult enough for actresses in their 40's, especially black women, to get quality roles.

Who ever took Vivica seriously? As a serious actor? She's never been that. From the Patti LaBelle sitcom to Ella Enchanted, she's a player in the sense that she has staying power, but she has no real chops. Viviv is this year's Whitney, leave that child alone!

Oh wow: Viviv and Arra! I can see it, except she's 30 years too old for him...

This is the most affection I've ever seen these two show each other. They are a very strange couple.
