Did you see the news clip where they were filming and an earthquake hit? They had to all evacuate the house in a hurry in case the hoard came crashing down.

Or they inherited someone's stuff who died and they feel guilty about throwing it away.
I can see that with hoarding and even compulsive shopping. The people I know who are compulsive shoppers are looking for "stuff" to fill a psychological hole.

I saw an episode the other day that reminded me of my MiL. She's a saint of a woman, but she's a borderline hoarder, my FiL too. They're able to limit it to certain areas of the house though, or the barn. For example, they had an old fridge finally die. Instead of just having it properly disposed of, they moved it out to their barn, and now use it as a paint storage cabinet. WTF? They never stored paint before, but now that they "can," they do. The area around their downstairs desk is overflowing with paperwork, and MiL buys things whenever its on sale and then puts it in a plastic bin in their guest bedroom. There are about 8 bins full of toiletries, medicines, beauty products, etc. I went in there one time this past summer to get a toothbrush, and there was a Crest tooth whitening set. She had to have bought it 10 years ago, because it expired in 2006. Same thing for a bottle of Tums, expired in 2008, and a giant bottle of motrin expired in 2006. They have 3 giant freezers and 2 working fridges on their property. There is food in those freezers that is more than 5 years old. I got a block of colby cheese out of there last summer, only when it thawed and I cut it up, it tasted of something awful. Thankfully the living room and kitchen are mostly clear except for a bit of clutter. But the other stuff, especially old stuff... it's just a hoard.

I already want to vomit!

A house filled with millions of roaches and black widow spiders. This is one of the most disgusting episodes ever.

I watched that new episode tonight. It was so nasty, I had to cover my eyes at times. The mother's attitude of blame and victimization made me so angry! She treats her daughter like a slave. I was also angry at the father for not advocating for his kids more and trying to get custody. These people were two fine examples of why not everyone should have kids.

New episode on Discovery Fit and Health.

She wants to save every item and her family wants to throw it all away because hundreds of cockroaches have been living in everything. She will need to soak the dishes and coffee makers in alcohol and sanitizer. Gross.

Her son: "You have a spider on you" *wipes off the spider*
The other guy: "Oh...fuhh-uhhhh-uhhh...." (

This show just makes me ill. Hoarding can be considered a form of OCD, something I've had a lot of experience with. But the scariest part to me is that while people with OCD are generally fully aware that their compulsions are irrational these hoarders don't seem to be. Or they're in deep, deep denial.

Discovery Health Hoarders:

This is disgusting. Millions of roaches. Roaches in the microwave and refrigerator. The bathroom is disgusting. Mold everywhere.

The mother is a hot mess. The ex-husband feels guilty for leaving his family but he can't save these now grown people. He visited them and cried over the disgusting house. The oldest son looks like crap. He looks so much older than he probably is due to his morbid obesity and balding hair. Hot damn mess.

The youngest son is embarassed. He and his father do not live in the house.
