Some time later, one of the bruhs there who had relocated to the cities for a little while from Howard showed us a video of their tour in Africa. At one location, the bruhs put on a step show for some teenagers, and then an Irish dancer put on a show for the same audience. They both alternated parts of their performances so that it looked kind of like a battle. I thought the bruhs set it off, but the Irish dancer came with it as well. A historical connection between those two wasn't really discussed, but it was still a great learning experience.
I haven't seen this fleshed out but during the early days of slavery, white indentured servants, mostly Irish, worked right along side the Black slaves, even intermarried until laws changed banning interracial marriage. I am sure that there was some cultural exchange during that period.

Actually there is some documentation about the interaction between irish dancers and African dancers producing tap.

OMG, I still remember that show and the routine you're speaking of. Yeah, it was horrible.

I don't recall being to a step show but I have been to a couple of stroll comps...

one in Spring 06, none of the teams were too good IMO (well there was that one frat but that's because their songs were the bomb! ), but this other fraternity (who ended up winning, def political reasons), did the SAME moves for all their strolls and one of their guys almost fell off the stage

In that same show the sororities were pretty good..but ladies PLEASE if you're going to be performing in front of a bunch of strangers please don't come out looking like a lady in the night...some of the outfits pretty much let the crowd see everything

In the fall I went to this one at NEIU, most of the performances were good, there was this duo strolling with booty shorts on and one of the girls had INTENSE cellulite, needless to say no one was paying attention to their routine, rather her legs she topped it off by doing her call and stopping before the stroll actually finished (we figured this out when the girl in front of her kept strolling and elbowed her in the face!) HOT MESS!

Lemme tell you a recent stepshow experience of mine. We were at Tuskegee University for the Battle of the Burning Sands Stepshow. The first 4 acts were good. We were excited because of the level of competition and the high energy of the show. The host was so not funny, but the H.S. groups and the musical performance saved him. Then right before we are supposed to go onstage they decide to have a stroll off.

IF you've ever been to a show at Skegee, you know they are in the gym, so we usually step on a tarp that covers the floor. You catcha wrinkle in the middle of a step you're DONE!

So the stroll off ends and my brethren smooth out the tarp for us, then they have a "Walk It Out" competition...which screws up the tarp AGAIN. I'm already pissed off because we've waited for 30 minutes since the last act. Then the comedian decides to be a praise dancer! What the hell!?!?!?!? Total wait since the last act: 45 minutes.

Finally we get out there and we are doing our precision thing. In the middle of one of our steps I look up and one of the judges is on his phone. I literally stopped stepping and my mouth fell open! I was pissed! I played it off by doing something that fit in with the step. What made it worse was that we have a part where I jump on someone's shoulder's. While I'm up in the air I hear, "Damn! How them niggas get on they shoulders?!?!?! Hey man, I'm gonna have to call you back."

Then the last part of the show comes and the DJ accidentally ejects our cd and we're laying down on the ground waiting for the music to start for another 2 minutes....needless to say I was pissed. We still won, but I was PISSED!
