Worst Step Show Experiences
Who's been in a step show? Did you mess up? or were you just too smoooooth?
|
I've been in some shows.....it's not that I was the perfect stepper. More like I was one of those really good ensemble players, lol.
But in all the shows I've seen, the WORST was fraternity XYZ at the Fall Show at Georgetown in 1999. OMG they were so horrible. Every person on stage was out of shape, overweight...... the style was more like aerobics than actual stepping.... and had the NERVE to be disrespectful to women. (And prior to the show tried to DEMAND that they step last!) They. Got. Booed. And trust, it takes a lot for a stiff Georgetown audience to do anything but politely clap. We never invited them back. |
I've never been to a step show (tho I'd love to!). The local on our campus has become very multi-cultural, and last year for Greek Week Mock Rock they added some stepping at the end of their performance. Maybe 2 girls were decent... but their performance proved that some white girls just shouldn't step.

The loooong wait in between groups. Oh wait, that's EVERY step show I've ever been to.

At my school...after the certain sorority/fraternity step, all the members come on the floor and sing their song...that took a lot of time, and meant nothing to us non-greeks...But overall, the shows were a pleasure to watch. Most groups had their stuff together. |

What the hell? EVERY org did this? There's usually a protocol about such things, written or de facto.... a step show is not really a place where I would sing my hymn. (Unless it was after the whole thing was over.) |
I was in a step show once, but I'll never do it again. That was one of the most embarassing moments of my life.:o I thought I would be nervous before the show b/c it was packed and the seats were sold out. When I saw the crowd screaming and chearing and people were yelling my name is when I got a little nevous. Though it was my 1st step show I still felt I had it together. Boy was I wrong.
Well to make a long story short, I dropped my Kane twice and when I did, it threw me off beat, which caused a chain reaction to my brothers. So they were off beat too b/c of me. Well...we smoothed it out pretty good. We actually did pretty good. The killer part is we had two different shows in one and originally I wasn't supposed to be in the 2nd show. Unfortunately the crowd didn't know that. They thought I wasn't in it because I messed up so bad in the 1st showing. The next day on campus everybody was asking me why I wasn't in the 2nd showing. I told them why, but I could tell they didn't believe me. For the most part though everyone was cool about it.:o |
In my first show, as a collegiate, we wore flat red shoes and during a kicking step, one of my shoes flew off! Fortunately, it did not hit anyone and it was near the end of the show. Of course, I heard about it for weeks. :o
In a regional show, I had brain freeze and forgot where I was supposed to go during a transition step. Fortunately, I remembered in time to give the 'ok nod' to start the next step. I played it off cool so that it looked like I was just the intro to the next step. :D Other than stepping on the yard, that is the extent of my step show experiences, probably never to be repeated again... |

However, EVERYONE expects at least one Kappa to drop a kane ;) |

Earlier this year at a step show in Atlanta, XYZ sorority's show was HORRIBLE! NO ONE was paying attention, and the crowd was talking so loud that you couldn't hear the steps.
Then they tried to do this comedic interlude, but these actors in the audience started imitating them and the audience found them much more entertaining! They weren't boo'd, but no one was watching the stage either. |
i was in a step show a few years ago in Cleveland (we came in 2nd, boo-hiss on those judges:mad:) and i remember a member of the XYZ team first had her pants button break onstage. she had to step holding up her pants the rest of the time which i'm sure was tough. that same member saw her "phony pony" fly off her head ALSO during the show.
that poor member:( unfortunately her moment lives on on tape... just a reminder, ladies: for the upcoming stepshow season, do make sure that "pony" is tight or you'll remembered for the same reason... |
At a step show in Minneapolis two years ago, a group, who got to step last, had a rather anticlimatic intro, then did a simple stroll for about two minutes before cussing at the audio/visual booth which played the wrong music. They skipped their outro and gave the a/v guy dirty looks the whole time. It wasn't the fault of the a/v guy that their performance was terrible. It was just extremely unprofessional and lacked a competitive edge... especially because they got to go last.
