I love when you say welp.
Anyway, sorry for the bitch remark. Everything that's thought shouldn't be said.

Since my retro recruitment thread's theme was about the discrimination that I and my eventual sorority's sisters faced I feel that I can address this issue in general. Was there discrimination? Yes. Is there discrimination in sororities now? At the campus that I know about...no. Are there pnms who have a problem with being Jewish, or thought of as Jewish...yes. And I think herein lies the problem, which is NOT with the sororities. (This is the second thread, one deleted, where a pnm wants to hide being Jewish and this one where "ancestors" whatever that means...grandparents, parent? were Jewish) Incidentally, I strongly suspect that the "ancestor" isn't that far back because many Jews changed their names (Berkowitz to Burke, for example) in the early to mid 20th century. After that very few family names were changed to hide or to become more Americanized.
If a pnm rushes and is cut from a dearly wanted house it is very easy to assume for these girls that it is because of the Jewish factor. It probably wasn't the "it" factor. But to go to college and hide a part of who you are leaves you wide open for very unpleasant episodes. Again, why would you want to join a house (if they exist today) where Jews/African Americans/Asians/whatever you happen to be aren't accepted? And somehow you got in by "passing", the term from many years ago, you will never be at peace, you will always be on guard and your sisterhood will be phony.

I think that the OP should just participate in recruitment and see what happens, since well, 20 years ago does not = now.

I do think it is worth repeating that unless you were a part of a particular membership selection process, the best you can do is GUESS why you were cut.
I was cut by a legacy sorority after the round of parties I went to right after learning my aunt had died of breast cancer. I broke down and cried during the party - was that why I was cut? Maybe - but it might have been because I was a sophomore. Or maybe because I was a theatre major (word was they didn't like to pledge them because they were so busy with shows). My grades were stellar, so it wasn't that, but they might have simply not thought I would be at home with them. Or they were just intimidated by my hotness. I will never know - and the op will not know why she was/might be cut by a house. However, I doubt it is because of a Jewish-sounding last name. But I don't know . . .

It probably helped her, and if it didn't, it will help other prospective sorority members who will have the same question in the future. Mothers, aunts, grandmothers will continue to share their sorority stories for years to come, and the biases of yesteryear will be the fears of tomorrow's prospective sorority members.
Wouldn't it be nice of the responses to this OP were stories of what it is or was like on different campuses? For example, if you are a current sorority member, which religion is most largely represented in your chapter? What is the "norm" on your campus?
Lovelyinpearlss, thank you for coming to GreekChat to openly express your concern. If you can practice ignoring the posts that offend you, and focusing on the helpful posts, you will find an absolute wealth of resources here. There are countless intelligent, articulate, well-mannered members who can give you good advice. Good luck with sorority recruitment!

After reading the whopping two posts of advice on what to do for recruitment, I'd bet a Dr. Pepper on it!
