this is soooo true! I remember when I got my current dog (a chihuahua) I was set on the name Ringo. When I got him however, he didn't strike me as a Ringo. Martini fit much better, and i'm happy with the choice!!

I just have to say, as someone who worked at a doggy daycare, and someone who now works at a vet clinic, please, PLEASE put some thought into your pets' names! I cannot tell you how many "Bailey"s and "Murphy"s there are out there! Show a little creativity, folks! And if I meet another terrier named "Jack"... I'll give it a nickname, I guess. Or "Stella" or "Bella" for girls= overdone! Think of something NEW!
But some good names I've come across at work:
Cat Benatar
Gunther (a German Shorthair Pointer)
Weiner (a female dachshund)
Tufts (a Chinese Crested)
Indiana (a dog, like where Indiana Jones got his nickname-from his own dog)
Tres (a 3-legged dog)

Our family has the most wonderful English Bulldog. DH and I had all kinds of UGA-related names (Arch, Henry, Grady, Sanford/Sandy, etc) when we were on the phone about to go look at him. All 3 kids asked what an English Bulldog was (oldest was 8!) so I showed them a particularly special 'portrait' of Uga VI. At that point, he became Uga the Wonderdog, and it stuck. He can't be bred (innocent heart murmer), so I didn't have to worry about registering his name. He's the BEST! Don't see us ever having anything other than this kind of Dawg
Family pet names we've had are Missy, Shelby, Princess, Frisky, Prince, Bitsy, Muffin, Ella (long story).
I don't like dogs having names of friends or their children...it's just weird to be out in the neighborhood and the gal across the street is calling her daughter at the same time someone is calling his dog from down the street--both with the same name!

I mostly call him just pig - & everytime we go on walks he is such the star. I've never had a bad reaction to the name (yet).
In addition to the snorts, his tail is curly like a pig and he sure does eat like one!!
Anyway, for a girl..and you're in the south what about "Sweet Tea" or Sweet Pea"?

My daughter's cat is named Piglet - for the character in Winnie the Pooh. You can see his picture in the Show Us Your Pets thread!

Black Lab whose CIA owner named her Spook!
She was a great dog, but after he was killed, I could not keep her!
Oh, Zoe and Sophie are not bad either! For small dogs only!

I don't know about girl dog names, but my two dogs are Cleveland (chow mix) and Jackson(black lab, English shepard mix) (both rescue dogs found on the streets in which they are named)

Nothing to do with the South, but the Norwegian Elkhound we had for years was named Tonka.

We met a Golden tonight named Reba. There's a good Southern name.

One of my ADPi friends teaches agility, and always seems to have two Samoyeds. The first two were Japanese names (one was Kiku), and the latest are Icy and Crystal. Crystal's breeder's last name was (seriously, folks) Chandler - two letters away from Crystal Chandelier!

When I was growing up, my dog's name was Harvey. It was actually Harvey Wallbanger. When he was a puppy, his eyelashes were red and my dad said he looked like he had been out on a binge. His name came from the first drink my dad could think of.
Harvey wasn't a boxer, but was a 90 pound mix-breed fox hound, and he was a great dog. Made friends with the mailman, protected the house against an attack from the Goodyear Blimp. All the qualities of a good dog.

My next door neighbor has a half great dane half bull mastiff ( the dog is HUGE and isn't even 2 years old yet) and his name is Bentley. He's a big dog but a sweetheart.
My boyfriend has a bassett and his name is Rollie Uga Marshall (rollie from 101 dalmations, uga for UGA, and Marshall because that's his 2nd favorite college football team) long name doesn't flow well but definitely fits the dog.
As for me, I have my sweet little Cocoa Puffs ( i call her coco for short) She's a weiner dog and i love her to death. She's definitely my baby.
As for southern names, like somebody said before any double names would work. Something really cute that my best friend's dad did is he got 2 new dogs (a rottweiler and a pincher ... they're super sweet and loveable.... unless they don't know you lol) and he named them Toma and Hawk ... put it together and it's Tomahawk. He's a big Braves fan been one since they were in Milwaukee.

I adopted my dog on Friday, I ended up getting a pointer/shephard/boxer mix that's about 1 1/2-2 years old.. and named her Scarlette! She's ADORABLE and really well behaved so far, and thanksfully she ignores the cat (who is terrified, poor thing.)
Thanks everybody for your ideas!

Did you adopt from a shelter? If I didn't have so many dog allergies, I would definitely try to rescue a dog from a shelter...
Welcome to Scarlette!
