Dog Names

So I am 99% sure I'm going to get a dog here within the next week or so after 8 months of consideration. I really give my dog a cute southern name since I'll be getting one down here, and my coworker just stole Duke and Dixie when she got 2 Boston terriers last weekend!

I'm thinking if I get a boy I'm gonna go with Jackson, but any suggestions for a girl? I don't want to do Belle because my dog at home is Bella and it's too close.

My brother and his family are getting a baby golden retriever in about a week or so. They're planning on the name "Barkley."

ETA--they had another golden years ago named "Bailey" so they're staying with the "B" names!

Obviously, the breed and/or how the puppy looks will play a huge role in his/her name. You can always name a female "Princess Something" or "Lady Something". Here's something that was posted on Dogster, but not linked:

Fifi, That ain't a name for this mutt.
So how about Champion?
Champion you're anything but.

We could call him Tiger, But there's no bite in him,
Tiger! Kittens would frighten him.
Rover! When you think it over,
Rover is the perfect name for this dumb look-in' dog.

Sandy, Sandy's his name if you please.
If you don't be-lieve me ask anyone of the fleas
Residing on Sandy,

True he ain't pedigreed, Sandy, there ain't no better breed.
And he really comes in handy,
'Specially when you're all alone in the night
and you're small and terribly frightened it's
Sandy, Sandy who'll always be there!

Honeychile, I'm a little bit disappointed in you. WVU alpha phi asked about a "cute Southern name." I though you'd be able to supply a few. (Shoot, how 'bout "honeychile"? ;))

My suggestions:

Bonnie (a black lab could be Bonnie Blue)
Scarlett (may be a bit trite, though)
Mellie
Scout (her "formal" name could be Jean Louise)
Eugenia
Eudora
Flannery
Sugar (or Shug)
Magnolia (call her Maggie for short, and get double points for the Tennessee Williams reference)
Tallulah
Beulah
Annabell
Liddie
Libba
Delta
Suellen
Sidie
Raney

If you want a Steel Magnolia's reference, Truvy, Clairee, Ouiser, M'Lynn or Annelle are all good choices.

If you really want to push the envelope, you could name her Varina. :D (BTW, it's pronounced Va-REE-na ;))

Can you tell I like names with a literary or historical connection?

I reckon I'll think of more later on.

Excellent list MysticCat! (I hate to follow that, but...)

Not necessarily Southern, but I've always thought it would be cute to name a dog after a vacuum clearner!

Kirby ?
Hoover ?

summer_gphib 05-28-2008 11:14 AM

When I was 7 I named a dog Curtis Mathis (we had just gotten a new TV :o ). I also had a cat named JellyBean. :D *lol* So a vacuum cleaner name isn't weird to me... unless it's Electralux. *lmao*

But saying that, Electra is a cute name.

SWTXBelle 05-28-2008 11:15 AM

Moon Pie!
Acadiana (call her "Cady")
Praline
Beignet
Creole
Evangeline

I love these!

In the food vein:

Hushpuppy
Grits (a sometime acronym for Girls Raised In The South)
Gumbo
Ambrosia (wouldn't be Christmas without it)
Biscuit
Julep
Spoonbread
Benne
Puddin' (Banana or otherwise)

TexasWSP 05-28-2008 11:53 AM

Miles and Greta for me. Chocolate Lab, German Short-Hair, respectively.

Not to be disappointed! I had seriously considered Magnolia, Sugar, Delta, Annabelle, Scarlett, and Varina, too. But once I saw my mother's name as a dog's name, I got a bit uppity! Jasmine, Shelby, Maybelle, and Velvet would be good, too. Not knowing the breed doesn't help, though.
