Yes, you are *so* wrong....
Buy either the Tape or the DVD. That comes with the play in it (It's set after the events of the movie with Produced, Directed, starring, etc. etc. by Mike.)

I think Disney should've made their first Black princess African. I mean, I'm happy they have one now and the movie looks cool, but I think it would've been more significant if their first was African. There's such a rich history they had to go off of it would have been way better.

But the thing is this. The average American, even African Americans, don't know squat about the culture and history of Africa. And the Cajun and Creole culture is something most Americans are more familiar with that is a unique culture in it self. I saw somebody said the use of voodoo was stereotypical, but it is still identified with New Orleans to this day.

I'm glad she's American. They already did a movie in Africa, and I don't think they wanted to "go there" again or even try to figure out how to deal with the complexities involved in that.
I'm just so excited for Princess Tiana. I saw the movie poster and took a picture with it! I can't wait until the merchandise comes out. My sisters will be getting Tiana everything for Christmas (and something for me too). I can't wait to go to Disney World and have my picture taken with "Princess Tiana". I'm beyond thrilled.

You don't have to wait or at least, not until December! Princess Tiana is already making plans:
Disney's upcoming animated feature The Princess and the Frog will not hit theaters until December 11, 2009, but its star, Princess Tiana, will be featured in her own show at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland much sooner. Called "Tiana's Showboat Jubilee," the new Mardi Gras-themed musical debuts on October 26 in Frontierland at Walt Disney World and on November 7 in New Orleans Square at Disneyland. In both parks, the new show will be performed on the riverboat while it cruises along the Rivers of America. Guests will be able to sail with Tiana, Prince Naveen, Louis the alligator, and others, as they make their way down the river, occasionally stopping to perform songs from the movie. The show will be presented several times daily and is slated to run through January 3 at both parks. Disney's first African American princess, Tiana will also be featured in a specially themed area in the Magic Kingdom for a meet and greet opportunity.

The average American doesn't know squat about Arabian or Japanese (or Neverlandian for that matter) culture, and that didn't seem to mean a hill of beans.

I would argue that point. I know a lot of people who have at least heard of the story of Alāʼ ad-Dīn, and the Cave of wonders. And for Mulan,a large part of it was them trying to get back on China's good side. And Asian Americans in general are a lot more in touch with their history then other ethnic groups.

My point was that Disney movies are not made for Historians. Otherwise, Pocahontas would have been a huge flop.

oh agreed. I never argued that. But Disney tries a lot for name recognition and if they can't get it they try to appeal to the people in some other way.

I must have missed it...
Why does it matter that she's black?

I'm assuming you mean Tarzan?

I think it is because they have already done Princesses of all other major ethnicity. Bunch of white ones, one Amerindian one, a Asian one (yes I know that Mulan strictly speaking isn't a princess, but she is counted as one of them) and even an Arab one.

I wasn't even thinking Tarzan, more like Lion King.
Belle, you just made my day! I let out a huge squeal. I can't wait! Now I have two reasons to go back to MK (my least favorite park right now). The new president added to Hall of Presidents and Princess Tiana's show!
As to what difference does it make that she's black...
I guess in a way it's not that important and it is just a cartoon. But it's nice to see someone that looks like you take centerstage. Especially when it's very rare that it occurs. I don't suppose you'd know what that's like EW (Invisible Knapsack).

*bump*
I was going to flip out as to why there was no thread for this, but alas, here it is. So who saw it? What'd you think, did you like it?
I loved it! There were some parts that I thought could've been better (the music for one), but it was a cute storyline. I liked Tiana's personality and how she was such a hard worker. I'll leave out details until more people have seen it but feel free to chime in.

I havent seen it yet but....
I am so looking forward to seeing this movie, I was in Florida at Disney World over the weekend and we visited Magic Kingdom, I was so excited to see that there was a show dedicated to our African American Princess Tiana. I just warmed my heart to see how well this story is being excepted and to see the little girls walking around the park with their Tiana dolls and some dressed up as Tiana (all races). I am truly excited and cannot wait to see it!

As for a Jewish princess... I was pretty young when this came out, but wasn't there one (or something that at least can fit into the Disney Princess family) in the Prince of Egypt?
