Disney's First Black Princess

This is very cool, but a long time coming. The movie is coming out in 2009. I wonder who is going to be the voices. I hope it gets the same reception as other Disney animated movies. It is going to be traditional animation, so it is going to be interesting to see how it is received.

From Wikipedia, the source of all credibility :rolleyes:
On December 1, 2006, a detailed casting call was announced for the film at the Manhattan Theatre Source forum. The casting call states the film as being an American fairy tale musical set in New Orleans during the 1920s Jazz Age, and provides a detailed list of the film's major characters, including the leading character, Maddy, who will be the first African American Disney princess. It was reported that Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, and Anika Noni Rose are all being considered for the title role.
will J-Hud's 15 minutes of fame be extended?

i think they could all be in the movie, there are enough roles to go around. im having a hard time seeing who would play what...

* Mama Odie - An elderly, 200-year-old Voodoo priestess/fairy god-mother.
* Ray - A lovesick Cajun firefly.
* Louis - A Jazz singer alligator.
* Prince Harry - A gregarious, fun-loving European Prince, in his early twenties.

I heard this on the radio and I think it's great...but I hate Jennifer Hudson so if she's voicing it, I won't see it.

I'm not a fan either....

I am glad that a "real" animated movie is coming out.... esp. since it's been awhile since Disney last released one. I'd be interested to see how it turns out, because it seems all of the other Disney "princesses" were based on fairy tales (Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Jasmine, Tinkerbell...) and this storyline isn't an old fairytale per se (at least not to my knowledge.. it might be a folk tale in other parts of the country)

It seems like this might be another version of Cinderella maybe? The chambermaid has a fairy godmother and she ends up marrying the prince.... the debutante chick throws a fit because she wanted to marry the prince...maybe the voodoo lady turned the chambermaid into a frog? and the prince kisses the frog?

I think it sounds awesome. I intend to drag someone to see it with me :p

Really?...Why so? I mean its cool that you are untitled to your opinion but I just never heard of anyone that hated J.Hudson. :)
Not because she great or anything but she is really not a controversy icon.

Sounds good to me.

It could be based on the Russian fairytale which also has Greek and Italian versions or a variation of Grimm’s “The Frog Prince”.

Jennifer Hudson weighs too much for me. How about Beyonce (post weight-loss)?

What's wrong with Jennifer Hudson weighing too much? I think it is awesome that there is finally a girl with curves in the spotlight! If I see another picture of an anorexic celeb, I'm going to scream!

BabyPiNK_FL 03-10-2007 11:02 PM

This movie really doesn't sound very princessy to me. And they put it in New Orleans, it would mean a lot more to me had they done it in Africa because they do have princesses there.

But, I'll take what I can get...I really want to see someone who looks like me be a Disney princess! (As long as Beyonce is in no way shape or form involved with the project and no one in the movie is referred to as Mammy or named Jemima! Missus, however is acceptable!)

Very rarely does someone leave me with so much to say that I'm dumbfounded. I feel like Jennifer Hudson at an Old Country Buffet. Now I must go out and convince some non-panty wearing anorexic MAW to come see my great view.

J-Hud isnt really "fat," she's just really booby. specially since she's always got them out and about

i mean she's no stick, but if you get rid of the boobs, or reduce them a bit, she may not seem as huge.

I agree! I may not be black, but for years I've been thinking that Disney should do an animated film set in Africa, with PEOPLE and a proper African princess. Not lions, warthogs and meerkats (though Lion King was good).

random info on the Disney Princess line

From Answers.com

Quote:

Character list
Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
Cinderella (Cinderella)
Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
Princess Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
Belle (Beauty and the Beast)
Princess Jasmine (Aladdin)
Pocahontas (Pocahontas)
Mulan (Mulan)
On the Princess Collection 2 CD songs by Meg (Hercules), Maid Marian (Robin Hood) and Nala (The Lion King) are included as well.

...

One major criticism of the Disney Princess line is that Mulan is not a princess as she is neither being born or having married into royalty. Mulan does not become a princess at any point since her love interest is not a member of royalty. Similarly, most "Disney Princess" material relating to Belle depicts her world as it was before the Beast became human and, thus, before she was, presumably, married to him.

Similarly, Princess Eilonwy (The Black Cauldron) and Princess Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire) are excluded from the line, despite both being real princesses. The main reason for this is the fact that both Atlantis: The Lost Empire and The Black Cauldron were critical failures and therefore not popular to both consumers' and Disney's eyes. Princess Tiger Lily (Peter Pan) is also excluded, possibly because she provides competition for Wendy. Lastly, Megara (Meg), the wife of Hercules, is not included. Though not portrayed as one in Disney’s Hercules, in mythology Megara is the princess of Thebes. In any case she is the wife of a son of King Zeus, which would seem equal to the status of a princess.
