See, this is what I don't get. Maybe that its just that I believe in being a bit more cautious...but seriously, NJ was called at 8:05. Polls close at 8. There were people still voting (my procastiniatining friend who got in line at 7:45pm) was still voting at 8:30. How can anything be called when people are still casting ballots??!!

The margin was expected to be so high for the candidate it would be near impossible for the other candidate to win. Hence, why ND down south to OK was all called at once.

Exit polls combined with historical voting trends.

I once heard the district that I was working called when we hadn't even opened the absentee ballots yet! These may be somewhat educated guesses, but obviously, the operative word is guess!!
I was once an election officer in Fairfax County, Virginia way back in 1988. Way it worked back then was that the live votes taken at the precinct were automatically tabulated when the polls closed, then called in to the county elections office. Of course, subject to any absentee ballots received, which are usually counted after the live vote. I don't recall if we even had any provisional ballots cast.

In states where early voting is allowed, they are usually the first numbers released.

Looks like Arlington, Texas is going to be the new home for the Dallas Cowpokes. The Jones tax passed.

Pete Sessions is beating the crap outta Martin Frost in District 32.

Local news has confirmed.. Michigan is 55% Bush-45% Kerry with 14% of precincts in.. NONE of the precincts in Detroit have reported yet. You can't call Michigan without the 400,000 voters in Detroit.

This is completely freaking me out!!!

A) I have three different news screens (well, two & GC!) on the computer, and am channel surfing like crazy, and each one has DIFFERENT TOTALS!!!! ACK!!!!

B) The second most disgusting person I have ever had the displeasure of knowing lives in Ohio. The very thought that he could have ANYTHING to do with the final decision on the Presidential Campaign makes me want to puke for years on end!!

Although I do think that Ron Silver has the right idea about exit polls, and people who lie when asked about who they voted for, just to make their life easier for their spouse, union, or such.
