Any news on the IU chapter effort? I definitely think expansion is needed there, considering only half the women who rush get a bid. The big hurdle is finding land for a house...there really isn't much, if any, to be had.
The chapter at IU closed at the end of the 1993-1994 school year after a few unsuccessful rushes. Alpha Sigma Alpha and Sigma Kappa also closed that year for the same reason. (Tri-Sigma had 35 or so members, Sigma Kappa had 62 and ASA had under 20, most of the chapters at IU have well over 100 members.) There was a story about that in the IU yearbook from that year. One tidbit: when the closing of the chapter was announced, the pledges (they were still pledges back then!) were given the choice to go through and be initiated, or to drop and be able to rerush another sorority in the fall. (The decision was made something like two weeks into the semester) Everyone chose to initiate, no one dropped. That really says something about Sigma sisterhood.

There was a presentation at IU in 2002-03 about recolonization. I was a member of the group interested in becoming a colony.
Representatives from Headquarters gave a presentation to the current greek community, then had another for the women interested in Tri Sigma. We turned in a list of our contact information, but unfortunately never heard anything further. All of the members of that group have since graduated.
IU does need another chapter or two because there are so many deserving women who don't get bids because of quotas.

I didn't join another sorority. I was a sophomore at the time and recruitment had already ended. IU is so competitive that trying to rush as a junior would have been fruitless.
I graduated last December and I've just been really focused on trying to find a job, so I haven't even thought about alumni initiation.
It definitely would have been nice to hear what happened. We didn't try to contact the IU greek office because they had been kind-of disorganized and unhelpful before the presentation; plus, the Sigma ladies told us they would update us. *shrug*

Psi
Psi Chapter is most certainly not closed and never ever has been!!! I know, I'm in it!
To answer whoever posed the question, "Why does Sigma go for smaller schools?"
Answer: Because at smaller schools, everyone is greek, thus the greek system flourishes there. Aside from southern schools, you aren't going to find a whole lot of big schools with big greek life. Marshall University has over 15,000 students and less the 5% are greek.

Small schools
Another reason Sigma chapters tend to me at small schools is because when we initially began colonizing, we went to teacher schools. Obviously these were smaller than most normal university. An example of this is my chapter, Alpha Chi, which is at Murray State University. Murray was originally a teacher's college and we were the first social greek organization to be founded there in January 1942.

Props to the awesome thread. I was a legacy, but my campus didn't have an active chapter anymore once I got there, so I chose another GLO. Still, kudos to keeping up with your chapters like this!

On a positive note...Tri Sigma has been invited to colonize at St. John's University on Staten Island. We are also presenting at High Point University in North Carolina!
p.s...I just realized that one of the next three chapters will be Eta Psi...then onto THETA Alpha and THETA Beta! Look how much we're growing!
