Beer & Wings

Ah, great way to start the weekend. I've got my beach chair, a cooler full of beer, a bucket of wings (medium-spicy) and this thread.

Whenever people like this come about, I don't bother being snarky. I just head down here for the food.

Mel, any Hefeweizen left?

Unhappy

It is totally terrible how all of you are treating this "greencup" girl!

She has no true knowledge of what goes on in a Greek Organization!

I think Sikes link says lots.

I guess it does not mean anything that We Buy our Friends to some.

Must not mean anything to partivcpate in Home Coming as opposed to standing on the sidewalk watching, doing monthly Alum Gatherings with Brothers/Sisters that we bought 5-10-30 years ago.

Just it cost a little bit more to buy your Friends? Hello, yes, and is worth every damn sheckle of it.

Will you go back to your alma mater upon graduation and bask in the glorie of your scholl, or do as we do, go back to be with our purchased friends? Basically I would compare Buying My Friends to a Fire sale, it is worth every penny It Cost Me!

greencup, do you realize how well some of on GC know each other?

Do you realize, that while some of us have not met but talked to each other via phone or helped each other out because We Are Greeks? It may be a different Affiliation but, We try to help each other out!

That is what being a Greek Affiliate is all about, not the amount of money!

I suggest you try it, there are many on here who AI after Graduation, check Alum Thread and see some of the Happy People!

greencup, are you still around or leave?

Because people change. Change is part of our personal growth. Many things in life change and people move on and people move apart and that's not anything new.

I would honestly suggest that you try to get to know some people that are in a GLO because you seem to have a one-sided view of things right now. Of course not all of them are going to be peachy people but that's the same for people that aren't greek as well.

I didn't buy my friends, I bought a brotherhood. (I don't expect you to understand this because you haven't experienced what I have.) That brotherhood will remain with me for the rest of my life.

I'm with Tom on this one.

Possibility a) The post was (deliberate) flamebait.

Possibility b) Someone's had limited exposure to greek life, it's as much a newsflash to everyone as the news "Water's wet!" that there are negative portrayals of greek life out there. So, it's not surprising someone comes across them and wonders how much truth they carry. Or, they may've had negative experiences and wonder how widespread such experiences are.

A bunch of people gave greencup the benefit of the doubt (i.e. that it just might be b) ) e.g. SiKeS UNLESS and UNTIL the originating poster proves otherwise. Which is cool.

Assuming it isn't a), then a question of "It seems crazy, what's the point of going greek?" is NOT the most unlikely response in the world from someone to some of the negativity, urban legends and general crap out there about fraternities and sororities.

Having fun is good but turning someone off of Greek life (originating poster or people who read this thread otherwise)... is a risk. Never know who's opinions could be swayed by stuff.

I remember one thread by someone in Ireland I think, who was off to the States the next year or something, asked something like "What's the point, isn't it all some big cult w/hazing etc?"/. S/he got some helpful replies etc and changed her mind and decided s/he wanted to rush when s/he went to college in the States.

All right enough rambling, I don't know the originating poster one way or the other but I'm with Tom and a buncha others on not assuming troll when I dunno either way.

eta: I started writing before Damasa's post, too. Who also made good points. I know all this was ramble-y but I'm thinking about the weekend.
