Another question: are there any good resources out there where I can learn more about ad law? I'm coming out of the advertising industry, so I'm just curious about that field of law. I looked on the NALP directory web site and found some firms that practice ad law. Or should I just be reading more about communications law in general?

(I'm NOT pre-studying for law school-- just curious about that field!!!)

This is very much a subspecialty. I know my law school didn't offer any classes on it, and I don't know any firms that advertise that as a practice area. While that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, it may as a subset of a bigger area. For instance, I have a case where two business allege that they sent in the materials and money to get their ads placed in the phone book (I represent the phone book company - Verizon) and the ads weren't in the phone book when it came out. They're claiming damages for the business they lost. That just falls into a contract dispute that's pretty basic. I would certainly advise getting a broad education - what classes you take in law school has little to no bearing to what you end up practicing most of the time.

And when you said "ad law" I thought that you were referring to administrative law, lol.

^ I think we actually had that exact case in my Contracts class. It was to illustrate that a plaintiff can't win damages on a contract claim if the damages claimed are speculative.

I don't want to study any specialties in law school per se (I am interested in more of a generalist degree than any certificates in things like real estate, environmental, etc.) -- I don't think you can become much of an expert in anything just from taking a few classes. I just wanted to know if there were any books about the field-- maybe I should look more toward communications law? Thanks again!!

<-------- Law Librarian checking in.

I don't know of any treatise that deals specifically with "advertising law" but you can take a look at the following bibliographies to get a grasp of the material out there: Advertising Law and Consumer Law. Not at all a comprehensive list but hopefully something you can use.

My PR prof just sent me an email (complete with GIF) congratulating me on my grade. I'm so entertained by this.

I don't recommend getting hit by a drunk driver during finals period. It tends to affect the grades just a bit.

Depends on the CALI and the job...

I'd say yes, but ask Career Services how you should list it. We don't call them CALI at my school (we use Dean's Award) and they suggested we put "Highest Honors: Crim Pro, Mass Torts" so that alumni from all the other law schools in our area would know what it meant.

Holy crap, I got an A in Civil Procedure. I was worried that my grades were going to be down because of the car accident, but so far so good.

Damn. An A in anything is a hell of an accomplishment. Congrats.

Thanks - that was my favorite class, so I figured I did well, but not that well. I also found out I got an A- in Torts, so as long as Moot Court continues to go well, my GPA this year should be pretty solid. I'm just glad that stupid drunk driver didn't mess up all my hard work this year.

More than one A? Damn. I've had A-'s and plenty of B+'s.. I understand that my school (a T4) grades low in order to discourage transfers. I'm carrying a B average and I'm in the top 25% of my class if that tells you anything..

But seriously, congrats. As for liking civil procedure, I think that makes you some sort of freak or something
