Lol, I'm sorry. That comment was meant as a dirty innuendo.

Sometimes you can find large wooden letters at a JoAnn's fabrics, but you might also want to check any other arts & crafts store in your town.

Ask around your chapter. Usually someone has a dad, uncle, cousin, s'mady (somebody)!

If not, ask around the boys (like someone said earlier).

Usually this gets the job done (cheaper too). But if you absolutely can't, then you have to decided if $200 is something your chapter can afford.

We got an adviser's husband to cut ours out for us. I have a friend who works at the woodshop on campus, and I was gonna have him do it originally. Here's a pic of ours:

You could try the local woodshop class of a high school. Maybe they could help you find someone you could hire if you don't know anyone.

When I was a collegian, one of our chapter sister's father cut them out for us. Do you know anyone with a jigsaw and a drill?

Not off the top of my head, at least not here in TN who has time.
My cousin in Ill is coming down to live in TN and he wants to be a contractor. I've asked him, maybe he can make them up there and bring them down with him

Hey, how do you get the outline sketched down on the plywood so neatly?

I still like the idea of having some burly man them. We had large wooden standards (like three foot tall letters on a stick to carry to football games, etc) at my school. If you looked at them closely, often there were little messages from the guys on the sides or whatever.

Brought back from the grave....
I'm a teacher; I propped the plywood up on the board in my classroom, put the letters on the overhead projector, and traced the image onto the plywood. lol

CDX sheathing (half inch) is the cheapest way to go. If you have more money, go with 3/8 or 1/4 ABX, which will be lighter, and will behave better if it gets wet. If you have letters that don't "stand up" by themselves (like Gamma), put a piece of aluminum tubing on the back. Then, poke a piece of steel conduit in the ground and slide the tubing over the conduit.

And, if you really have the money, marine plywood is the way to go.

This is an election year, which means http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrugated_plastic is everywhere. Just grab a few signs (hopefully after the election). Laminate them with RTV, and tape the edges with black duct tape.
