It's not. It's one of the things I will never understand about some competitive recruitments. I don't get why they would say in their recruitment books that something is appropriate to wear when it's really not.
If anything, I think there should at least be a disclaimer saying something like "This is the attire suggested by Panhellenic, however many PNMs choose to wear something dressier for this round."

The point is that we aren't supposed to cut girls based on appearance. We're supposed to seem inclusive, even though image cuts happen. It's like the rec thing: we aren't supposed to cut girls for not having recs because we should be getting them ourselves... but it happens.

Liar. You are way too cute for that. I would have loved you despite your flip flops and I would have found you a rec.

In all seriousness, those girls at the White House were a great example of what NOT to do - wear dressy dresses with flip-flops. It looks terrible. Your shoes should go with your outfit. Like AXiDGrl said, there's nothing wrong with wearing flip-flops if it's philanthropy day and you're wearing shorts & a t-shirt - you certainly wouldn't wear heels then!

Why anyone would take a perfectly adorable sundress or other dress, then add flip flops is beyond me! It just shows a lack of style.
Of course, I keep remembering that a lot of people call them "shower shoes", so I don't like to see them in anything but the most casual clothes.

we've never cut girls based on footwear choice (not that i know of), but think about it -- a lot to most sorority houses have hardwood or tile floors, which can be slippery in flip flops...and you risk that annoying flip flopping sound...also, during recruitment last year i witnessed a PNM walking down the stair, slightly trip a bit, her flip flop broke, and she fell down half a flight of stairs. we didn't make a big deal of it, and she is one of my sisters now...but it was, i'm sure, embarassing to her...flats solve this problem...way to go flats! at my school the first day of recruitment is super casual -- PHC provided T-shirts, jean skirts -- and most girls wear flats or cute, trendy sneakers (think more of streeth sneakers, like pumas, rather than nike shox). and yeah, some where flip flops. and i feel bad for those girls when it rains.

It has, and will always be, MUTUAL SELECTION.
We must continue to maintain that.

So are you just talking about the spongy style flip flops, like toe goz, and rainbows and reefs?
My daughter's friend just bought an adorable pair of black flip flop style dressy sandals--they're leather, they have a small heel and look cute with a sundress. Would you consider something like this "flip flops" or "sandals"?
The only time my daughter wore flip flops with a dress was on bid night when they run for the roses. If you don't get to the front, you might not get a rose, so you don't want heels slowing you down!

what is "running for the roses" ???
I hope that's not chasing after a man with a rose. I never chase a man anywhere. He either brings the roses to me (preferably white!) or he sleeps on the couch.

I think it really depends on the campus. At my school, everyone wears Rainbows almost year round: rain, shine, hot, or cold. My chapter is even wearing them for a couple of recuritment rounds. So, it's definitely not uncommon to see them worn here with sundresses and skirts, people even go out to bars and clubs in them. That said, for dressier rounds of recruitment, I walked from house-to-house in flipflops and then changed into heels there. Then again, there's always the option of wearing a "dressy" flipflop.

After dinner on bid day, the girls run from fraternity to fraternity singing their newly learned sorority songs to the new fraternity pledges; the pledges then sing back and give the girls roses. But...since most of the fraternity pledge classes are smaller than the sorority pledge classes, sometimes there are not enough roses to go around, so getting in the front of the pack will get you a rose at every house. They end up with HUGE bouquets of all different colors of roses.

That's very cute. Although I'm inclined to agree with bejazd. The boys should be coming to YOU...not the other way around (and should bring enough roses for the whole class).

Not sure why they do it that way. The do go off campus for bid day festivities, so I really don't know if all the sororities do it at the same time, or they just start doing it whenever they get back to campus.
Details become scarce once they go away to college.

Thanks NUBlue!
I'm just kidding of course. (I'm a little partial to my naughty boy Sigma Chis and their white roses. ) We pretty much did the same thing on our campus..we called it "tapping"... the fraternities brought their pledges to our house and they sang to us, and we took our pledges to their houses and sang to them. although as I remember it if there were flowers involved they brought for example, pink carnations to our president.
We girls have to work together to train these boys better. It's flowers for all of us or none of us...and bring them often! with candy! (good practice for later when it's going to take flowers, candy and jewelry...)

Sounds like fun, but do they still do this "after dinner on bid day"? I'm just asking because of the NPC unanimous agreement about not involving men in any bid day activities. Maybe the "bid day" technically ends with the dinner or something?
