Even people who do it in a joking way get on my nerves with it sometimes. Like overweight girls who feel like they ALWAYS have to call themselves the "big girl" and laugh it off so that no one thinks it hurts their feelings...obviously they're not as okay with it as they want to present themselves.

I'm not talking about in a joking way, either. The people who do it in a self pitying manner... It seems like they're just fishing for compliments.
Yes it does! My mother does this constantly which is why i only call her once a month and probably talk no longer than 20 minutes (yes I know this is bad but this has been going on for 20 years and I refuse to constantly put up with it).

In the defense of people in reasonably good shape that put themselves down . . .
Many are not fishing for compliments they just use a different standard of comparison.
Someone that is close to excellent shape may complain they need to lose weight, even though they are in better shape than most people. Because 5-10 pounds on them can tragically mar an otherwise excellent body type. Whereas 5-10 pounds on the really out of shape wouldn't even be worth mentioning.
5-10 pounds on a bikini body is really noticeable.
I do some people that only fish for compliments, and I define them as people that complain but will take no positive action to change. That applies to both the fit and unfit.
