I have a lot of family here who eat like that, and I noticed it in Sicily when I went there, but I always figured it was some European thing.

Fruit and cheese is a mostly Mediterranean thing. You will see it a lot in French places too. One of my favorite french places was in the georgetown area in dc and when I was working for a client in fricking Dulles, VA a couple years ago we'd drive down there all the time just because I liked it. It's a really simple and light food.

As for cheesecakes, the best cheesecakes are made italian style in nyc...

Several other suggestions:

Try to serve prosciutto (=ham) with cantaloupe, that is really Italian. Also if wine is not permitted (due to panhellenic and non-alcoholic beverages), try to serve spurmante (= Italian soda)instead.

OH or cold coffee. It's espresso with sugar and a tad bit of cinnamon, put in a jug or some kind of closed pitcher. You can either freeze it or cool it in the fridge. My family lives off of this in the summer.

For those in NY... it tastes like a flat Manhattan Special. I don't particularly like it, but alot of non-Italians do.
