Maybe she means they don't find out who their "specs" are until after they cross.

Not at all. I was reaching on that one, trying to think of a tradition debate that people could relate to.

As I said, different members feel different ways about it, BUT as a national organization, not participating in a coming out does not bar you from membership. At that point, you're already a member. I'm sure all organizations have traditions that members having differing opinions about, right? Without going too far into the paper/real debate, I must say that I wouldn't ever consider anyone to be paper. If you are my Soror, you just are, no matter what brought you to me. That's just one of those things people don't necessarily agree on.
While that is true, outsiders should never know whats going on inside your house.

I'm also confused about the the "paper/real" debate. I didn't think newer organizations would have this conflict...

Exactly! You are a member once you've crossed, whether you want to participate in a "coming-out shows" or not. I don't know if there is a difference in our opinions, just a misunderstanding.

Epitome: I misunderstood what you were saying. What I was refering to was that we don't allow people to wear letters before they are actually members.

evidently, we're operating on two different definitions of spec's because that's not what i got from it. i thought the neos were just being hush in order to surprise the campus.

She said: "the people they recruit do not know who they are being recruited by until the day of the coming out 'party.'"

Knowing that some NPHC chapters don't reveal the spec's until after they cross, her statement makes sense to me.

well, you're using the word spec for neo or new members, then. i always thought a spec was someone in another organization who you thought was special to you. i got a few spec's in the sororities.

I am using "spec" synonymously with "personal."

This may be an issue of semantics but it's the recruiting that's throwing me off. If she had said they don't know which member was assigned or chose to be their big sister/brother or special I would have followed. But the whole paragraph was just strange to me.
