NPHC Members - ?????
 

I have a question for members of NPHC organizations. After you cross, are you required to have a "coming out" before you're allowed to wear 'nalia and tell people of your affiliation?

Are the rules different for undergrads and graduate members?

While I don't speak for any chapter of any NPHC organization but my own (which does not currently have neophyte presentations) I would say that in my observation, the presentation of neophytes to the public is an important tradition among undergraduates. I wouldn't say that they HAVE to wait to wear paraphernalia (because that would probably be considered hazing) but the specialness of the event, along with the tradition of the campus probably suggests that the initiates wait for an official introduction to their campus.

And of course, not every undergraduate chapter has neophyte presentations.

ETA: The neophyte presentation is such a special event at many schools that they "regulate" such events. For example, a few schools mandate that all such presentations be held on the same day (or not at all)....other schools require that you request the space (even outdoor spaces) in advance. So, the schools indeed know that there is a gap between initiation and "debut" and are supportive of the discreet period in between.

While it's not a requirement for membership, most undergraduate chapters do present new members in some form as our tradition dictates.

I know how it USED to be (which is why I was asking), so thank you for this clarification!!! I think this is a great way to continue the tradition without running into "hazing issues."

No. We don't allow that stuff...;) :D

On my campus the NPHC's have coming out "party". They just recently had their coming out party and even invited my chapter to come take in it but many of us couldn't go bc we had an emergency EC meeting....and I do know by the time the coming out "party" was going on, we were hungry and wanted food. Although one of my sisters did go and she said it was very interesting. I also know, on my campus, not sure if it is how other NPHC's run their program, but the people they recruit do not know who they are being recruited by until the day of the coming out "party".

Note: Reason party " " is because on my campus we are encourge not to call an event a party. so just going by those lines bc I am use to it :rolleyes:

Honestly, different members of the organization feel different ways about this, BUT once you cross, you are a full member with full benefits. If you do not participate in a coming out and you want to wear 'nalia from day one, you are still a member. As I said, it is not a requirement for membership.

As I said, different members feel different ways about it, BUT as a national organization, not participating in a coming out does not bar you from membership. At that point, you're already a member. I'm sure all organizations have traditions that members have differing opinions about, right? Without going too far into the paper/real debate, for example, I must say that I wouldn't ever consider anyone to be paper. If you are my Soror, you just are, no matter what brought you to me. That's just one of those things people don't necessarily agree on.

I'm confused too. There is no recruitment in NPHC first and secondly they would have to know which org they are attempting to join. Now if you mean, the other NPHC groups or campus doesn't know who's ATTEMPTING to join what group until the "party" then I'm following you. No one is supposed to know who our new members are until they have finished the process. My friends just knew I disappeared for a while and that's all they were supposed to know until I was a member.

I was with you to the paper/real mention. So is a lack of formal show equal to being considered paper?
