I'll tell you what really helps is Ambesol (sp?). You can buy a little bottle of it over the counter...I'm not sure what it is, but someone else mentioned brown liquid and this stuff is brown. All you do is take a Q-tip and dot it on the sore, and wham, it doesn't hurt anymore.

My sister says the best way to get rid of the sores is to scrape the white stuff off the top, which hurts like hell but makes it heal faster. I'm still skeptical, but hey, I guess it's worth a shot if you're really desperate...

I use to always get canker sores-- my dentist suggests L-lysiene. You can find it with the vitamins. The bottle will say to take 1 a day--- my dentist suggests 3pills 3 times a day. Yes, it sounds like alot--but i swear it works!!! I have told many people who also swear by it!!
Usually my canker sores will be gone after one days dose.

good luck!

I've heard that cutting a raisin in half and putting the inside side on the sore will help make it go away...something with the vitamins in it...maybe C or K? I've never tried it, but it might be worth a shot!

I'd heard it was a form of the herpes virus, too. I know at least herpes causes some form of cold sores -- I had a close girlfriend who got herpes, um, elsewhere from her boyfriend who had cold sores.

Apparently there's Herpes Simplex I and Herpes Simplex II.

And that is all I know.

Canker sores = Ulcers

Cold Sores = Herpes (and cold sores are not always the same kind as genital herpes)

I'm bumping this thread so I can whine about the canker sore I have in the back of my mouth. It's the bottom left corner of my mouth right by my last molar. I stabbed myself there with my toothbrush last night and I almost cried.

I get these when I'm stressed. I also break out when I'm stressed so I'm dealing with that, too. Good fun!

**To repeat, canker sores are not the same thing as herpes. They are not even remotely similar. Herpes is a virus. Canker sores are an ulcer that form because your own immune system decides to attack your mouth. Some people are more prone to getting them than others because of genetics. Canker sores are not an STD.**

I can so relate to this thread--I get AWFUL canker sores!!
They are stress induced(so around finals, I am in massive amounts of pain) and there is a prescription strenth salve your dentist can prescribe that works GREAT! Its kind of grainy and you put it right on the sore and it burns like a bitch for about a second and then goes numb and is gone in like a day or 2.
If you really care, it technically eats the infection out from the inside. I HIGHLY reccomend it if you get them all the time--I have a order for it always on standby at CVS!

I hate canker sores. My freshman year I had canker sores in my throat. The doctor said he counted about 5 of them. I couldn't talk or eat. I could barely open my mouth. I lived on protein drinks and ice cream. The ice cream really felt good on my throat. The doctor said I could gargle with warm salt water or hydrogen-peroxide mixed with mouthwash. I was too afraid of accidentally swallowing the H-P, so I used the warm salt water. After a few days, I was as good as new.
