Hiya
so i looked up your question about AST. And my stuff shows that we were active in 1985 but there is no date for closing, though the chapter is designated as inactive, so I would guess that that chapter folded quickly. Give our nat'l hq a call if you are unsure. The number should be at the bottom of the front page of the nat'l site. Good luck!
Tau love

This is an educational experience for me--I knew Theta Phi Alpha was in the NPC, but I had never really heard anything about it before now. I wonder, do small campuses generally attract the smaller, lesser-known groups? Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course , but none of the "big name" sororities were ever at Rio and I'm just wondering if it's because it's small...here, we have a big campus with all the well-known groups, but we don't have any smaller ones. (We had Phi Sig a long time ago, but it's gone now.) I'm just thinking out loud here...

Anyway, I would say e-mailing or calling the sororities' National Headquarters would be the best way to go. The Baird's Manual is good, but as someone mentioned they are hard to find (our main library doesn't even have the latest edition, and it's a HUGE library) and you may not be able to find one that's got the info you want since you would need one published after the 1980s to find out what you want to know.

*Edited to say that I did some detective work (otherwise known as putting off homework as long as possible), and Zeta Theta Chi was Alpha Sigma Tau, and Chi Omega Alpha was Phi Sigma Sigma. So there you go.*

Theta Phi Alpha is one of the smallest National sororities but is one of the fastest growing sororities. As for being generally on smaller campuses that is true, but we do have some on bigger campuses. I think a lot of this has to do with being well known. If one of the smaller National sororities was on a campus with Delta Delta Delta, Chi Omega, Phi Mu, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Gamma, or any others, we would lack in numbers since majority of the women going through recruitment look at the bigger sororities rather than the smaller ones. On my campus, we have four national sororities; they are Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Theta Phi Alpha. All of which are on the smaller spectrum of National Sororities.

As for expansion, if you are interested in finding out more about Theta Phi Alpha please private message me and I can give you the Director of Expansion's e-mail address.

I hope all of this information is helpful. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Holy sh!t Dana, that's cool as hell. That's like....omigawd. And here..I was led to thought that ZOX was PSS...that's why I was really lost on the AST deal *boggles*

Well, I guess calling up old AST and PSS would not be a good idea now. Just so you know, these local's take great pride in their past and I personally would not want to intrude on their past, ya know? Oh, just to add to the confusion, supposedly Lambda (sp?)-Omicron Psi was Theta Phi Alpha. (a few months ago one of our non-trad's in the band had that letter shirt on). But enough mystery for me.

Oh, to answer the question of big name vs. small campus. It's due to mainly the $$ situation. I mean, you can pay $400 in dues or $40. Also, since the quota deal is hot in the Nat'ls agenda many of them could not keep w/it. As of right now the smallest sorority on campus is a big old number ofmaybe....4 actives? They lost their only pledge this semester which didn't help matters much.

Sorry to ramble, but now I've got to study. Cheers.

No. In the past, there were NPC sororities on her campus which disbanded and evolved into local groups. She was trying to determine which NPC groups were on campus and which local GLOs they evolved into.
