Just an FYI, we don't use the term "nationals." Their charter was returned to the Fraternity.

We had a fairly quick one with our Alpha Omicron chapter (Central Ark) where they closed in 2006 and were brought back during spring 2008. They seem to be thriving. That's the only one we've had that went well, though.
We attempted the same thing with our chapter at SIU (closed in 2008 and was invited to return in Spring 2009) but the colony interest wasn't there, so it didn't work out.

Not so much anymore. Information just travels too quickly. It's not worth the $$$ to try to immediately regroup and have the same result as if you had just said "ok we're done for now, see you in 5 years if there's a hole."
It also depends on how the chapter is looked at by the campus community. If the group is one that's generally liked and has just gotten to the point where they're completely burnt out and truly do not have enough members to function, and are pretty much begging to get closed just so they can have a break, I can see that working more than if an HQ closes a chapter for image or RM reasons and tries to immediately recolonize.
FWIW, I classify "quick" as a year and a half or less.

I would say our University of Michigan and The Ohio State University re-orgs were both successful.

How quick was the turn-around? And how recent were these?

At the University of Arizona AXO has tried to recolonize several times, but always to soon. The result was finally leaving and waiting at least 5+ years. The sorority members down there even recognize that they need to leave for that period of time so that there aren't people there who remember them. Adpi recolonized there and was very successful. A Phi did it at ASU many years ago and they have been very successful so it can be done and done right.
On a side note ASU is expanding. I believe 6 chapters sent packets.

In both cases, existing members took alumnae status with immediate recolonization the next term, in both cases. For the University of Michigan, it was a while ago.. 2000 or 2001. For The Ohio State University it was in 2007. When big houses are involved, it's worth the risk to try to recolonize immediately rather than have to wait for expansion opportunities in the future (see Michigan State and Berkeley).

I am so keeping my fingers crossed! ASU is in my backyard, and I would LOVE to be involved in a colonization.

ASU (home of our Beta Kappa chapter) is on my list of dream recolonizations. I can dream, can't I?
