I'm wondering, did snapping start with Legally Blonde or was it before that?

That definitely came out when I was in Med school, but SWTX was before Legally Blonde, right? I figure Legally blonde had to have gotten it from somewhere.

I'm going to have to agree with KSUViolet on the fact that when someone tells me they went to such-and-such school, my first thought (and sometimes response is), "Oh, my sorority has / had a chapter there."

You also know you're in a sorority when someone (guy or girl) mentions they are applying to an SEC school or a school like Indiana and your first thought-aside from telling them what a good choice in schools they've made is, "Wow, that's a really tough recruitment." After that thought, if you're talking to a young woman, you instinctively tell her, "You're going to need recs if you go through recruitment there," as you determine whether or not you would write her one.

You also know you're in a sorority when someone (particularly a speaker) mentions they were Greek or that they attended a university where you have a chapter and now you're wondering, "I wonder if that person is a sister."

That happened the other night at a Junior League meeting. The President is the most bubbly Alpha Phi (from the Alpha chapter) and she and I are both all about our GLOs. When a member got up and mentioned she was Greek, our ears perked up. Our President, once she stepped back up to the podium said, "For those of us sorority girls in the audience (then she looked at me and winked) we'd love to know which sorority you are from." She answered Delta Gamma. Even though it wasn't MY sorority-I was still pretty excited!

I think snapping was before that because according to Chi Os on my campus they've (their chapter, which was on campus in the 70s) always snapped...they're the only ones, so it's memorable because during times like recruitment and greek week when girls got a little catty that was the most popular way to make fun. (All in good fun fun, I promise).

My chapter is really into Brown Eyed Squirrel (Brown Eyed Girl) so I have at many times found myself singing "squirrel" instead of "girl" and doing motions all by myself (or just involuntarily squealing when I hear it) while the people around me obviously begin to wonder if I'm nuts. Ha! Nuts!

I still hide my drink behind my back in photos. Even if it's not alcohol.

I'm 36.

Oh, and as far as I know, only the GPhiBs at UGA snapped back in my day.

It has to be chapter by chapter/org by org because we never snapped but GPhiB on my campus did. DG might have too but I don't recall.

HAHA! I totally do with popular songs that we've used for recruitment. We used "Sexy Bitch" one year, but changed the words to "HEY! Be an Alpha Xi, an A-XI-D!" (we shouted over "sexy bitch" really loud, I swear!)

I can also never hear "Welcome to the Jungle" again without turning it to "Welcome to the Xi House".

Always making sure everyone is in te picture, no "half" faces.

Always wondering if people I meet were greek in college.

Drifting to jewelry in our colors

Being really happy when meeting new students who are considering recruitment

Haha...yeah the only time I helped with a Lip Jam skit was my freshman year and Def Leppard still makes me cringe with embarassment. So there's that and Brown Eyed Squirrel...plus I Want You to Want Me bcause that's our Chi O chapter's song and any time either of our songs was played at a party the other of us made sure the other ours was, too. I heard it almost as much as Brown Eyed Girl.

I forgot about that...I hide wine glasses/beer bottles/etc. and Solo cups still. Which is good I guess since my FB will be almost totally alcohol free when I apply for a real job. But when I'm not at a party with Greeks I do get weird looks for that.

I also forgot that I'm extremely attuned towards anything red/buff/green...my mom laughs at me when we go shopping because anything with that color combination might as well be jumping straight into my face. Squirrels, too. And sometimes bronze, pink, and blue since one of my best friends/old roomates is a DG. I kept finding anchors and bpb items for her when she lived with me.

We also don't snap, we clap in our chapter. Our provience director came down last week and started snapping, we all laughed and then contimued our clap.

The KDs on my campus ditto. It's a hand motion (like your pointer and middle finger move up and down), they do it at open pan and other greek events. We all call it the KD Ditto, and will occasionaly make "the ditto" the funny part in the story . But what is even funnier is when I went on fall break with a couple of KDs (it was a large group of friends and representatives from 3 fraternaties and 4 sororities; needless to say we got some weird their all in different letter looks but that a differnt story) and they started to ditto at a restaurant and had to explain what in the world they were doing to the waiter... it was hilarious.

Ditto!

As for snapping, pretty much every chapter on our campus snapped. I remember my first meeting as a Panhellenic Delegate and we snapped. I remember thinking, "Wait... we aren't the only ones who do it?". National Convention is also fun, with a ballroom full of women snapping away!

I also do the sorority pose in every picture, enough so that my non-greek friends make fun of me. (All the sorority women I am friends with are equally guilty.) In all our recent family pictures, my sister and I are there in the front, doing the sorority squat. My mom finds it endearing.

--------------------

......... when you still color-code everything.
......... you still have theme parties as an alumna.
........ your non-Greek friends always pick you to organize events.

My first week of medical school I organized a mock anatomy practical for our class. At least twenty people asked me afterwards if I had been a president of a sorority in undergraduate.

You're a sorority member when...

You don't know or have forgotten the original words to the campfire song "Today", only your sorority words. Somewhere on GC we shared them years ago.

"The arrow, the angel, the wine and the blue, the friendships, the laughter, the good times we knew.."

Supplied by my Chi O daughter standing here, "The owl, the carnation, the cardinal and straw.."

OMG! I completely forgot about the Ditto hand sign! We did that too when we needed to be more quiet. Glad to know other people do this, too!

...you do a double take when you see an item in a store with a sorority symbol/mascot/color or anything that may look vaguely like your symbol/mascot just to be sure you don't NEED more sorority swag. I still do this 18 years later! Half the time, the black and white animal that catches my eye is just a cow.
