At my school, almost all members in APO, AKY, and DSP were not part of social GLOs. The social/business fraternities prided and promoted themselves on not being a social GLO and, based on my interactions, thought they were better because they had a business or service aspect. I don't think this is the norm based on other people's posting on GC, but it's how it works on my campus.

In all honesty, the groups here operated just like social GLOs (parties (APO in particular), pledging, community service, campus events), they just weren't bound by any Greek Council. Additionally, these groups always had a ton of members wear letters to the bar/parties frequently.

It's funny because if an IFC or Panhel member is seen at the bar wearing letters, the councils and greek advisor is not afraid to call your chapter out publicly. It is even worse if the photos are on Facebook and someone found it. One person got, from my perspective, blasted and publicly humiliated in front of every council and chapter e-boards at a leadership retreat a year or two ago.

No offense.... but if that's par for the course, then I can see why the other groups would pride themselves for not being social orgs. That was absolutely the wrong way to handle things.

Well, to be fair, the only people that knew about this were chapter e-boards. It hasn't happened again though. Wearing letters at the bar by social GLO members is now few and far between. Though, unfortunately, because of the similarities in letters, AXO girls got unfairly accused of going to the bar with letters, despite it being APO members.

From the APO Risk Mangement policy

ALCOHOL and DRUGS (SUBSTANCE ABUSE)
The possession, use and/or consumption of Alcoholic Beverages, during any fraternity event, any event that an observer
would associate with the fraternity, or in any situation sponsored or endorsed by the chapter, must be in compliance
with any and all applicable laws, policies and regulations of the state, county, city and institution of higher education.
The unlawful possession, sale and/or use of any illegal drugs or controlled substances at any fraternity sponsored event,
or at any event that an observer would associate with the fraternity, is strictly prohibited. Chapters, Interest Groups and
Petitioning Groups of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity shall not use or condone the use of alcoholic
beverages as part of their membership recruitment “rush” or pledge education programs. No Chapter funds shall be
used to purchase alcohol. A violation of this policy shall be deemed a violation of the membership policies of Alpha
Phi Omega National Service Fraternity.

Some chapters do have chapter Risk Management documents that are closer to the NPC rules though. Generally not a good idea to be drinking in letters though.

My APO chapter had a lot of people who were also in social fraternities and sororities - in fact, several of the officers while I was active were also social Greeks. Our rush happens each semester, a couple weeks into the semester, and does not conflict with IFC/PHA rush. The exact structure/schedule of rush differs with each semester/rush chair, but in general there are a few different rush meetings and socials on different nights of the week. (Rushees only have to attend one event) Induction comes at the end of rush - when I was pledging and active we had one main induction date and one or two smaller alternate inductions for those who could not make the main one.
