Oprah Winfrey's Legends' Ball is set to air on Monday, May 22nd at 8pm on ABC. The show was first scheduled on the 15th, but it was bumped because of the President's address. The hour-long special is a behind the scenes look at the spectacular event she hosted at her California home honoring 25 outstanding African American Women. Special guests included the late Coretta Scott King, Cicely Tyson, Diana Ross, Dr. Maya Angelou, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Angela Bassett, Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Tom Cruise and Halle Berry, to name a few. It's a good time for Oprah. Her Broadway musical The Color Purple has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards. The show airs on June 11th on CBS.
In other Oprah news, her best friend Gayle King is keeping mum, but she really wants to replace Star Jones on the ABC daytime talker The View, if she leaves. Gayle is ready to strike out on her own. She wants to be a personality in her own right. She realizes there is more to her than being Oprah's best friend. Gayle doesn't want to seem obvious going after the job because she is friends with Star Jones, but she really wants it.
You can say a lot of things about Whitney Houston (drug use, sex toys, bad behavior), but don't say she has a brain tumor. Spokespeople for Whitney are blasting tabloid reports that claim she is suffering from a brain tumor. They say the story is not true and she may sue.
The fight is on for the estate of Richard Pryor. The comic legend passed away last year, and his daughter Elizabeth wants her fair share. Elizabeth claims her dad's wife mentally abused him. Elizabeth wants Jennifer removed as trustee of The Pryor Estate citing elder abuse. She says Jennifer isolated her dad from his family causing depression along with his MS.
Time has run out for Ronald Isley of The Isley Brothers. Isley is scheduled to be sentenced on August 21st. He faces up to 26 years in jail after his conviction on tax evasion charges. He was also found guilty of cashing his dead brother's royalty checks. A judge has ruled that this will be the last continuance in this case. He was supposed to be sentenced at the beginning of the year; then, the beginning of May; now, the D-Date is August 21st. Will Mr. Biggs wind up in jail?
More plastic surgery for Vivica A. Fox! Vivica recently underwent breast reduction surgery. A few months ago, her left breast implant deflated on her, and it was embarrassing. She couldn't dress in those sexy revealing gowns she loves to wear. Vivica went down two bra sizes, and she is currently getting ready to be a celebrity dancer on the next edition of Dancing with The Stars.
What's up with Kimora Lee Simmons and her estranged hubby Russell Simmons? A few weeks ago, they announced their separation, but lately, they have been spending lots of time together. They do have two children to raise and their separate business empires, Phat Farm and Baby Phat fashions. Friends of Kimora say she is only staying close to Russell because of the finances. He used to date Actress Ruth Warrick, who played "Aunt Phoebe" on All My Children. She claimed they dated for 16 years and they never had sex. Gest is known for his extravaganzas and weird makeup. He wants to talk about his life growing up and competing with Michael Jackson regarding plastic surgery. He also plans to share stories about his friends Dionne Warwick and Smokey Robinson.
Singer Johnny Wilder, Jr. of Heatwave has died. Wilder was 56-years old, and he sang lead on many of the Heatwave classics like "Always and Forever," "Star of the Story," "Grooveline" and "Mind Blowing Decisions," to name a few. In 1979, Wilder was injured in an accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
The husband of the late Songwriter Linda Creed has also died. Stephen Epstein, a.k.a. "Eppy," passed away late last week. "Eppy" was a music promoter, and he was working on a movie about his late wife. Linda Creed died 20 years ago from breast cancer. She wrote the George Benson and Whitney Houston classic "The Greatest Love of All," and teamed with Thom Bell to write many classic Sound of Philly songs including "The Rubberband Man," 'You Make Me Feel Brand New,' 'Betcha By Golly Wow,' "I Don't Want To Lose You," and 'Old Friend'.
Janet Jackson recently celebrated her 40th birthday. She looks amazing. She recently lost about 65 pounds following a strict diet and exercise regime. Janet says she had originally gained weight for a movie project, but the movie fell through. She realized she needed to get her body back in time for her new album this fall.
Chris Rock is set to direct and star in the movie I Think I Love My Wife. The movie will also star Gina Torres and Kerry Washington.
The popular ABC series Grey's Anatomy is moving to Thursday nights. The show will go up against CBS's number one show CSI.
