G-g-g-g-nit!!! Luke Campbell sues Fiddy

D***, Luke, are you that publicity-hungry?

50 Cent sued for copyright infringement

Associated Press
Last updated: 2:25 p.m., Friday, January 20, 2006

MIAMI -- Rapper 50 Cent stole some of the lyrics for his 2003 hit "In Da Club" from a song by former 2 Live Crew frontman Luther Campbell, an attorney claims in a lawsuit.

Richard C. Wolfe filed the copyright infringement lawsuit against Curtis James Jackson, aka 50 Cent, in Miami federal court last week on behalf of Lil' Joe Wein Music.

Parts of "In Da Club," from the album "Get Rich or Die Tryin'", copy "It's Your Birthday," released in 1994 on Campbell's solo album "Still a Freak for Life," the lawsuit alleged.

A message left Friday for Wolfe was not immediately returned.

Lil' Joe Wein Music holds the copyright to "It's Your Birthday" and other songs Campbell produced with his rap group 2 Live Crew and as a solo artist. Lil' Joe Wein Music is owned by Joseph Weinberger, an attorney who formerly represented Campbell.

Campbell's song "I Like It, I love It" can also be heard on the 2003 DVD "50 Cent The New Breed," the lawsuit claims.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages in addition to attorneys' fees and other legal costs.

Wolfe won a $2.3 million judgment against Campbell in 1994 for another rapper who claimed Campbell withheld royalties.

A message left Friday for Dennis Dennehy, 50 Cent's publicist, was not immediately returned.

Nas Signs With Jay-Z, According To Report
01.23.2006 8:03 AM EST

Former rivals partner up in new label deal, The New York Times eports.
Nas and Jay-Z

It's like Shaq and Kobe moving next door to each other, or George Bush and Al Gore going on a fishing trip together. After years of verbal jousting followed by a shocking public truce, bitter rivals Jay-Z and Nas have sealed their peace with a recording deal.

According to The New York Times, the long-rumored deal bringing Nas to the Jay-Z-led Def Jam Recordings label has been completed, turning the former foes into business partners. Though Sony and Def Jam representatives would not comment on the story, the Times quoted unnamed sources describing a scheme that would have Nas' longtime label, Sony Music, and Def Jam split the profits, or any losses, from Nas' next two albums.

The Times reports that Jay-Z has agreed to have his label pay the cost of producing and marketing the albums and then divide the profits with Sony after expenses are recovered. The labels will work together to plan and execute the marketing campaigns for the records. The deal pays Nas around $3 million, including a recording budget, for each of the two albums, and has a clause providing for two additional albums for Def Jam.

The deal comes three months after the rappers staged one of the most surprising public truces in the history of hip-hop and sets the stage for Nas' next album to potentially include the first significant collaboration between the two rap legends (see "Jay-Z And Nas Put Beef To Sleep In Onstage Show Of Unity").

On October 27, Jay-Z headlined the Power 105.1 "Powerhouse 2005: Operation Takeover" show at the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey, dubbing his portion of the gig "I Declare War" (see " 'I Declare War!' Jay-Z Says He's Going To Air Some Rappers Out Onstage"). But instead of blasting his rival as expected — and as he did four years earlier at a Hot 97 concert that kicked off his beef with Nas — Jigga announced, "All that beef sh-- is done, we had our fun. ... Let's get this money," and called Nas onstage to perform with him.

For Nas' thoughts on working with Jay-Z, see the feature "Nas: Major Figure."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Some ladies are proving that it might be best to think twice before creeping. If you thought Karrine Steffans' "Confessions of a Video Vixen" was causing people to talk last year, wait until you get a load of what Carmen Bryan, Nas' former girlfriend and mother of his daughter, has to say. She has an autobiography called "Sex, Drugs and Hip-Hop — Oh, and Did I Mention Love?" coming out soon, and she's not holding anything back about her relationship with Nas or her alleged affairs with Jay-Z and NBA superstar Allen Iverson.

King magazine has the first scoop on Carmen — who has become the subject of lyrics in such songs as Jay's "Super Ugly" and Nas' "You're the Man" — coming up in their February issue. We've read it, and you'd best believe your eyes will be bulging out of your head when you see it. Here's what Carm had to say about Nas' alleged cheating heart.

"We had an argument and he was like, 'I'm a king, Carm. Do you know how many girls would love to be in your shoes right now?' That was his favorite line," she told the mag. "I never had to deal with lots of groupies calling me, but I heard things. I asked Nas about some of them. Way after we kind of broke up, I asked him about Lil' Kim, Eve, Mary J. Blige. The only one Nas ever admitted to dating was Mary."

Luke Distances Himself From 50 Cent Lawsuit, Calls Lawyers 'Crooks'
By Nolan Strong
Date: 1/20/2006 4:30 pm

Rapper/mogul Luther Campbell has come forward to comment on a recent copyright infringement lawsuit filed against 50 Cent, over his hit single "In Da Club," taken from 50 Cent's hit album Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

Attorney Joseph Weinberger, owner of Lil' Joe Records, recently filed the lawsuit in Miami federal court. Weinberger owns the rights to recordings by 2 Live Crew and Campbell.

Campbell was quick to distance himself from the lawsuit, which claims 50 Cent stole lines from Campbell's 1994 song "It's Your Birthday," from the Miami pioneer's solo album, Still a Freak for Life.

"Let the record reflect that Joe Weinberger and [Weinberger's attorney] Richard Wolfe are the individuals who are suing 50," Campbell told AllHipHop.com. "They are not suing on behalf of me or any member of the 2 Live Crew.

"These guys (Joe and Richard) that's all they do is go around suing people and use our names. When they do sue people and make money on that catalogue, neither me nor any of the 2 Live Crew members receive any money from that."

Weinberger once represented Campbell and became owner of the copyrights when Campbell filed for bankruptcy protection.

"They stole that catalogue from the members and me and we don't make money from it," Campbell said. "When you read my book, 'My Life and Freaky Times,' you'll get the full entire story surrounding these two crooks and that catalogue."

Neither Wolfe nor Weinberger were available for comments as of press time.

Below are the first four pages of the 27-page lawsuit.

Will Nas be the one to assist Jay in delivering the fatal blow to Cam'Ron? Hmmmmm......

THE ROC IS IN THE BUILDING!!!!!

Soror Gina, where are you?

On the Luke/50 thing: If Luke was smart enough to take care of his businesses and owned his masters, there probaby wouldn't be a lawsuit to begin with.

Again, THE ROC IS IN THE BUILDING!! (I'm very excited about the news!)

Believe it or not, being KEVIN FEDERLINE'S original baby-mama isn't a fulfilling enough life. SHAR JACKSON. . . the mother of K-Fed's two eldest kids. . . is looking for work. Did I say "looking"? I believe I meant DESPERATE for work. Shar's P.R. firm is circulating a press release touting Shar's "accomplishments". . . and apparently asking for some kind of magazine work. The release says, quote, "Shar is an actress, singer, entrepreneur and single mom. She is definitely living proof that dreams and goals are still attainable, no matter what life throws at you. Shar has gone through one of the most publicized breakups in the world with ex-boyfriend Kevin Federline, who is now married to Britney Spears. . . Shar can be a number of things for your publication: Fashion expert, Relationships / Fun expert, Advice Column Writer, etc. We are very open to what type of feature you would like to do. Feel free to make any suggestions."

That dang Kanye thing betta (yeah, I said betta) not be true!! For God's sake, she has been with Tommy Lee and Kid Rock (yuck!)!!

Maybe we should start this rumor: Kanye goes with a non-famous Delta from South Carolina after they met at his performance in Greenville. He noticed her when she was wearing her "George Bush doesn't care about black people" t-shirt.

BV Buzz 1/23/06

I posted some on the DH thread.

Buzzworthy
Nick Cannon has left Jive Records and signed a new recording contract with Motown Records. His sophomore album ‘Stages’ will be released this spring and feature appearances from Kanye West, Anthony Hamilton, 112, Izzy and Talib Kweli. Motown president Sylvia Rhone has also signed Mya to its roster.

‘Crash’ star Don Cheadle is suffering from a basketball injury. Cheadle tore his Achilles tendon during a recent game of hoops. The Oscar-nominated thespian will undergo surgery and should be nearly back to normal by the NAACP Image Awards in February.

Integrity Gospel artist Stephen Hurd will record his sophomore album for the label on Feb. 22 in Washington, D.C. at The Temple of Praise church. The session will be produced by Grammy-winning producer Steven Ford (Richard Smallwood, Deitrick Haddon) and feature contributions by Stellar-nominated songwriter Jonathan Nelson (Donald Lawrence, Bishop T.D. Jakes).

Please stop emailing me about Sanaa Lathan and Denzel Washington. Lathan has not—I repeat—has not had a child by Washington. Anyone can pull up images of the ‘Love & Basketball’ star over the last 365 days from any of the photo agencies and see that she has not been pregnant. Despite what conflicting tabloid reports have said, no, Washington’s wife isn’t leaving him and no, he’s not leaving his wife for Lathan. End of story. Kaput! Another Internet fabrication put to rest.

BV Scene

Can’t Say Names …

Sources say a notoriously difficult Hollywood actress has outraged yet another African-American magazine. Said C-list talent was approached about appearing on the cover of this staple urban glossy, but after having her publicist give the magazine the business, she declined to participate. When the actress and her camp discovered that the magazine was going to purchase pictures and put her on the Hollywood theme issue anyway, she had her rep call and fuss at the publication. After all of the theatrics, said actress conceded and approved the pics.
Didn't we say before this was probably Regina King?

Has anyone heard about Nas' daughter's mom releasing a book in which she talks about his relationship with Mary J. Blige?
