hmm...
No, it's correct... Beta Psi Chapter - Arkansas State Univ. ... Elvis is Honorary (he's the only honorary on that list)...
Honorary members are approved by Nationals (Grand Chapter), are contributors to the chapter in different ways and are "initiated" as well...
Willie Nelson did attend college for some time after the Air Force...

I'm challenging on Faulkner as an SAE. It seems unlikely, really, if you know his biography. "Count no 'count" was an SAE?
(By some accounts, he dropped out of high school, went off to join the Royal Air Force because he was too short to join the US military for WWI, when he was enrolled at Ole Miss, he was a special student, and I think, kind of thought of as unusual. It just doesn't seem like he would have been invited to join SAE, but maybe I'm wrong.)
Are you saying that the Modernist writer was in a fraternity as a young man or are you saying the fraternity gave him honorary membership, or maybe, that the fraternity had a member named William Faulkner, but he wasn't the writer. What are the circumstances of his membership?
The list is impressive enough without him. If you've got Walker Percy and Shelby Foote, you're well represented in terms of 20th century southern men of letters, even without Faulkner. I certainly don't mean to slight the rest of the list or SAE.

Fair question for which I do not have any kind of direct answer for.
He is listed as a Brother on our Nationals site as well as many others.
And yes, he was at Ole Miss for a very short period of time.....

This may have already been posted; I didn't read through from the beginning.
From http://www.deltasigmatheta.org/ :

Patricia Roberts Harris served as Delta Sigma Theta's first Executive Director. She was also the first Black woman to be appointed ambassador to a European country (Luxembourg) and to be appointed to a presidential cabinet post as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She was later appointed as Secretary of Health and Human Services. In January 2000, she was honored on the 23rd commemorative stamp in the United States Postal Service's Black Heritage Series. Other Deltas that have been ambassadors are Ann Holloway and Bynthis Perry.
Dorothy I. Height, Ph.D., 10th National President (1947-1956), was appointed by President Carter to the Presidential Commission on a National Agenda for the 1980s. She has served as president of the National Council of Negro Women for over 40 years.
Alexis Herman was the Secretary of Labor and a Cabinet Member in the administration of President William Clinton.
Darlene Clark Hine, Ph.D., noted author, built her career on researching, publishing and raising the bar of how the experience of African American women should be recorded. She was the first African American to become the John A. Hannah of History Endowed Chair at Michigan State University.
Shirley Jackson, Ph.D., is the 18th President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is the first African-American woman to head a leading technological university, the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (in 1973), and she was the first African-American woman to become a commissioner of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

http://www.squarebooks.com/faulkner/chron.php
This is a chronology of Faulkner's life from one of the bookstores in Oxford. They have him joining SAE in 1919, which would have been when he was at Ole Miss.
It seems like they'd be up on their Oxford history.
So maybe he was a regular member.
ETA: why do I only see my errors when I see them quoted? Why can't I proofread my own comments the first time? Argh.

Thank you for your fine bit of research.
This would seem to confirm that Mr. Faulkner was a Brother:" 1919
Visits Memphis and New Orleans; poem "L'Apres Midi d'un Faune" published in the New Republic; enters University of Mississippi as special student; joins fraternity (Sigma Alpha Epsilon); short story "Landing in Luck" and poems published in student newspaper The Mississippian. "

What is really cool, is that there are so many Members of GLOs who have for years are well known and have distinguished themselves because of being Members of GLOs!
I will not go into the LXA list as We were only Founded in 1909, but with so many to be named!
But, from checking web sites and the many posts, it just goes to show, WE are important in many ways!

I'm wondering if Neil Armstrong had several wives, or his one wife belonged to eight or ten sororities?
In any event, I'm surprized Apollo XI ever got off the ground with that many sorority badges on board.

I am going to clear up this moon thing once and for all-
Neil Armstrong's first wife Janet Shearon Armstrong is an Alpha Chi Omega (from the Purdue chapter.) He did not take her badge into space with him, he took his Phi Delt badge, but did not leave it on the moon.
Perhaps wife #2, Carol Held Knight is a Tri Delt?
Even if she is, he and Janet did not divorce until 1994 and I don't think that Neil has been on the moon in the meantime, so no Tri Delt badge on the moon either.

When did this thread become the "Copy and paste the famous members from your GLO website" thread?
Trust me, no one cares...and even if they did they could go to www.GLO.com and find out.

Agreed. At least put like just the most prominent dozen or so. I'm not going to read through all of that.

Or go back to the title of the thread and the original post and see that this thread was never meant to be a place to list famous members, regardless of whether the list was only 12 or 12,000:

That's what I meant -
I know it turned into that about page 3, but I don't really want to wade through that garbage to find the actual information.

AlphaFrog, agree, it goes without saying that each of us as GLOs have illustrious members.
That is simply because We As Glos are Special!

Are they even members to begin with?
I saw a lot of webpages that said both are KKGs, but if it's not on the official HQ website, then maybe they're not really members. I don't pay attention to HQ websites that often so I don't know if they were even listed there before.

Yes, Candice Bergen was a member of the Beta Alpha chapter at UPenn. It is my understanding she resigned membership by choice within the last 15 years link
Mariska Hargitay was also a member of the Gamma Xi chapter at UCLA but was dismissed at some point. link
Even alumnae can be dismissed or resign membership, just as active members can, for a myriad of reasons.
As OTW said, the most complete resource for notable members is the organization webpage.

Yes and no, if HQ doesn't post their names on the public site and you don't know their maiden name, then someone "famous" might not be found out so easily.
I'm more impressed when initiated member continue to be active as much as they can.
I'm definitely not impressed when someone pointedly doesn't want to be reminded they initiated. Unfortunately, it's frowned about hit them over the head with whatever they signed.

That is probably true for many organizations, but I know that AOII discourages the listing of prominent members and therefore does not list any on our IHQ webpage.

Because all of our members have something special to offer AOII, not just the ones who happen to be "famous".

Honestly? I know that people like to brag and say "so-and-so famous person is a member of my organization!" They even like to post lists detailing all the famous people in their organization. I think it's great knowing that you share a brother/sisterhood with a celebrity -- but how many of them actually stay active as alums and give back to the organization?
I know that there are several celebrity Greeks who remain loyal to their organization and give back when they can, but I'm thinking the majority of them don't even give a shit anymore.
It's like, "Hey! Amber Brkich Mariano is an AGD from Westminster in PA! She won Survivor All Stars!" Whoopdefreakingdoo. What has she done for the Fraternity after achieving celebrity status besides give one interview to the Quarterly?
You can list pages and pages worth of notable alums, but what good is the list if they don't bother to have anything to do with the organization?

I like that reasoning.
However...st the same time, it's nice to have a list just so we can put rumors to rest once and for all. One visit to AGD's website clearly proves that Raquel Welch, Madonna, Carole King, and Betty White are NOT AGDs.

I think every member has a role that can be defined by their careers.
I wouldn't expect Lionel Richie to be a Regional Vice President, but I appreciate the concert he gave during our centennial (at no charge to the fraternity) as a fundraiser for the foundation.
Several prominent Alphas moderated seminars at the centennial convention. Also, depending on where the general convention is, you might have various local alpha politicians or celebs come and give remarks.
Which is good enough for me.

Most of ours do, so I don't have any complaints.

I'll be honest: I wasn't really into the thread that much but the William Faulkner as fraternity guy thing was really worth thinking about as far as I'm concerned.
Rather than notable alums, I'd like to see unexpected alums.

I don't have strong feelings about it either way, but I agree that there would be some advantages to having a list. For one, some individual chapters feel pressured to list notable alumnae on their webpages because the other sororities on their campus do. It would give them a concrete, accurate list. Plus, many people misconstrue it to mean that we have never had a notable initiate. I did think it was sort of strange when To Dragma (our magazine) did a feature on Courtney Kupets (the Olympic gymnast who is a member of our chapter at U of Georgia.) It was interesting, but it draws attention to a notable member, which I thought was the point of not having a list. Of course, they also did a feature on GC's own Snowlady, who is not "famous", so maybe it's all cool.
