I know my mom's group doesn't go all out. they wear purple shirts and jeans with their hats. She does have a purple boa though.
It is mostly an excuse to hang out with her friends--"Oh but I have a meeting on Saturday night for the Red Hat Society" It is something for her to look forward to.
